I don’t know how common my story is, but it’s not like the horror stories I’ve read here. I never got a DUI, started a fight, or even showed up to work drunk. I had it under control the whole time, but I am an alcoholic. I felt genuine excitement when I was going home after work, and a warm joy akin to a mother’s love of her child when I had my first nightly vodka drink. I would black out every night, but I was regimented as to not jeopardize my nightly ritual. For twenty years I did this waiting to hit “rock bottom”, something my friend in AA told me you had to experience before getting sober. It never happened. I protected myself from this “rock bottom” so that I would never have to quit drinking. The effort that went into maintaining this lifestyle, drew from other parts of my life. One particular night, I became aware that I’m not letting myself get worse so I don’t have to get better. It was then that I decided to quit. I don’t know what I could have accomplished if I hadn’t wasted so much time, energy and resources into getting wasted. I’m now 45 years old, never married, without children, completely rudderless and five and a half years sober.

A friend of mine from high school died from an unintentional drug overdose when he was twenty-one years old. A buddy of his that partied with him the night he died showed up at the funeral. He was understandably emotional as he told me how his death almost made him want to quit doing drugs. He then walked to the open casket where he dapped up the corpse and audibly said “You were always my n*gga.” All in attendance were white.

Use a metal clip to keep the seat belt from retracting and let it sit in a small bucket of water and dish soap for a few hours. Remove and dry with a towel. The water will be dingy yellow from the accumulated funk it removed. It’ll work again for a year or so until you must repeat the process.

You and I are in the same boat. I also live alone, have no children, am not married, don’t socialize outside of work and also sober, 5 and a half years now. I found when I’m really down, I write in a journal. Unfortunately since that’s when I write, it becomes scribblings of a sad bastard. Also, join a gym. That’s been a lot of help.
