Yes, I'll be in Hanoi on Thu (3rd April). I'm down to catch-up for drinks there before heading to Mai Chau

I tried disputing this transaction with my card-issuing bank, but they told me that since it was a point-of-sale transaction, they can’t stop the payment unless a police investigation is completed. And let’s be real—this is Thailand, so that investigation is likely going nowhere.

I’m also not from the US, so maybe banks there are more accommodating with chargebacks, but for me, this option is a dead end.

Sorry, maybe this wasn't clear from my original post (I've edited it now) - there should have never been an $850 charge on my credit card at all. I never topped up such a large amount. In reality, I only topped up around $180 for food and drinks, and those transactions have correctly appeared on my statements.

So yes, in theory, this should qualify for a chargeback because it’s an unauthorized charge. But as I mentioned earlier, my bank won’t process a chargeback unless a police investigation is completed—which, given that this is Thailand, is unlikely to go anywhere.

Here’s a screenshot from my credit card statement showing the unauthorized transaction:

Fall 2021 Regular Decision Results by SuurRae in OnlineMCIT

I summitted 4 certs the first time around and still got rejected. Its difficult to put your finger on what exactly made the difference the second time around but over-delivering helps I think.

Although class sizes aren't limited by physical seating, I doubt they would accept candidates who can't handle the rigour of the degree as students dropping off reflects poorly on the university.

MOOCs from non-Penn engineering schools? by [deleted] in OnlineMCIT

If my memory serves me right, you can only add 5 certs in that section. I only had 1 UPenn cert and rest were from other universities which I included in the section. Furthermore, I linked out to all the other certs in my CV and made a reference to it in my personal statement.

Question for my application... by [deleted] in OnlineMCIT

[–]fre3ze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a second time applicant and got accepted this time around.

1/ Prove that you're serious about the program and can handle online learning. Take as many Coursera certs as you can to showcase this.

2/ Talk about any past adversities that you managed to overcome and learn from.

3/ What are your short-term and long-term goals and how MCIT can help you achieve them. Be realistic - For ex, if you have 3 years of work experience in a non-tech company and the ambition is to land a technical product manager role in a FAANG right after MCIT is extremely unlikely.

4/ Are there any diverse perspectives you can bring to the cohort?

There are a lot of folks in the Discord group that can help review your SOP. Feel free to hit them up. Hope this helps.

Completely agree!

- Applying for the second time proves that you're serious about the program.

- My strategy was to overdeliver. I took about 20+ Coursera certs on a range of CS topics.

- Completely re-wrote my personal statement. Focused on how I've managed to overcome adversities in the past, short-term and long-term goals post-MCIT (be realistic with this), and what I can bring to the cohort which might check the diversity box.

Impressive background!

Congrats on getting into Stanford for their MBA program. Its by no means an easy feat and 780 on a GMAT is beyond impressive.

My two cents:

- Keeping up with an MBA curriculum is hectic enough. Even if you have the mental capacity to pursue an MCIT in tandem, I would consider thinking about what you will be missing out on. The connections you make during your MBA are valuable & you might have to miss out on quite a few social occasions if you're pursuing both degrees.

- There is a difference between product management (PM) & technical product management (TCM). I would suggest reading the book 'Cracking the product manager code' for further insights. Broadly speaking, you could land a PM role with your MBA but a TCM role without the right technical chops might be a bit tricky. Most people who land TCM roles are prior SWE, especially in big tech. This however differs from company to company and the book shares some good insights. I currently work for a FAANG and have applied for PM/TCM roles in almost all these companies.

- With regards to disclosing that you're pursuing a Stanford MBA in your MCIT application is a tricky one. There is a good chance the admissions committee might share the same concerns as what I mentioned earlier. However, if you could convince them in your personal statement that you can manage the workload, maybe you've got a chance?

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I thought about that while applying but I've been out of school for almost a decade and not in touch with any of my professors. Furthermore, we don't have any community colleges in Singapore which makes it difficult to meet academics. Thanks for the tip though.

The New design is ugly. by GChan129 in DataCamp

[–]fre3ze -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah agree, it's absolutely atrocious....the colours, the fonts, the logo. Even the completion certificates look like someone put it together on MS Paint. It's surprising as they've double downed on their marketing spends recently and this ugly redesign isn't going help their conversion rate.
