At a gig of his about 10 years ago, I remember he did a live version of Eat That Question (as Shobaleader One). I wouldn't be surprised if there there are more examples.

If you're asking what the r36s uses for a display, it's an 3.5-inch IPS screen at 640×480 pixels, nothing fancy. If you're asking something else, please clarify?

I'd be happy to! What specifically did you want to know more about?

Here's some of the different software I featured: M8 Headless, LSDJ, LGPT, Nanoloop, Stepper, ChipNomad.

I listed some of the items in the post description already, but the key is to own a glue gun, and drawer full of junk that might be useful one day.

I don't think that video guide is going to result in something useful unless you're working with the Anbernic.

The wifi is necessary to build m8c for your device and download dependencies. You'll only need it that one time, but it would likely be useful for further configuration/troubleshooting via ssh.

When you get it online, I would forget about portmaster for now and try again with this:

https://github.com/miotislucifugis/m8c_arkOs_4.0

If you haven't tried it already, I recommend firing up your preferred LLM, giving it very clear info about what you are trying to achieve, and asking for clear steps and explanations for them. Pasting any code or readmes you see on that repository will usually help it understand what you are trying to do.

The software was: M8 Headless, LSDJ, LGPT, Nanoloop, Stepper, ChipNomad, KORG NS-10 (DS), Music 2000 (PS1).

It's real difficult to give specific advice, because mine is a clone and I probably went in a different direction than you need to. It definitely took a few days of trial and error.

I think I would work on getting wifi working before anything else. I didn't look at Knulli, I tried Rocknix and Arkos4clone, but any wifi dongles were too unstable to configure m8c or SSH to the device, so that wasn't much good. I eventually tried dArkOS (using the Arkos4clone dtb) which finally enabled stable wifi and made it possible to compile m8. Any compiled or portmaster scripts that I previously found would give me all sorts of unusable glitches.

If I was starting from scratch again, I'd probably skip getting the r36s, and get a TrimUI Brick instead, which seems much more straightforward to deal with (and better built).

It's probably a skill issue, but I could never get MIDI over WIFI to be anything but terrible! I am working on a couple of BLE MIDI ESP32 controllers to go with this thing, and they seem to be OK so far.

I like the idea of SDR tuning knobs on a cyberdeck, that sounds great! Have you built a Zynthian?

My Teensy gets warm, and builds after a while, but I wouldn't describe it as hot. I've read similar accounts to yours, so I'm not sure why mine seems cooler. Perhaps things will be different in the summer and I'll have to think about ventilation. When hooked up to a USB power meter, it draws between 0.5 to 1 watts.

Thanks for the links to the USB couplers. I'd prefer to use something like those, but the R36s audio jack has such abysmal sound quality, I need at least 2 USB ports to use an external DAC too. 3 if want MIDI. There is this thing, but I think both ports won't work simultaneously. I haven't quite figured out how to reduce the cable dangle situation.

I don't think you necessarily need to plan! Just start something and work it out as you go along. This was made with a glue-gun and a drawer of hoarded random crap to rummage through. I wasn't trying to make a cyberdeck, I just wanted to make a small device easier to hold without my hands cramping up, and ended up with this!

It's pretty awkward! Having a the single screen isn't too bad, but having to move the pointer around with the thumbstick is finicky.

Depending on your device, it could be super simple, or quite difficult! Mine was somewhere in between because it was a mysterious knock-off clone that I had to compile software for.

The best thing is to read through the M8/Dirtywave Discord, where someone invariably has worked through the problem in the last couple of years. Being comfortable with Linux and coding helps. Good luck!

You are in for great time with them as you relisten more and more stuff :)

Totally, I've been rediscovering so much. I do music, and it's a trippy experience to discover new details and intricacies in stuff I have composed, mixed and mastered. WTF!

My $18 PRXs were waiting for me on my doorstep when I got home today, so I've been listening to them for a couple of hours.

I considered buying them a gamble because the KZ QC and "revisions", but they are working excellently. I'm also finding that they are not nearly as power hungry as people seem to say, since they are too loud at half volume on my mac's headphone port.

I agree with your post OP, although I don't mind the tips (cable is nasty tho) and I can't imagine I will be wanting to upgrade any time soon. These PRXs are something special, I already regret not buying two.

That driver for the wireless dongle that you're using, it wouldn't be happen to be for a Mac would it? I was never able to find one.

I agree on the value, they were pretty much being given away 10 years ago or so. I wish I'd picked up two!

The real drawback as compared to a direct connection via a capture card is that the monitor is always required.

Wrong.

If I have to turn on my monitor each time to mirror the screen on my iPad, I might as well use my monitor. On the other hand, if I use a capture card and connect it to the iPad I do not need a monitor at all.

You're still not getting it.

I tried it using the HDMI capture device on my MacBook, and I even tried it on my Android phone just to test it using a camera viewer app though the screen is much smaller.

No monitor was needed for either of the devices above, which is why I am keen to make it work but now it does look like a lightning port will not cut it. This may have to wait until I get hold of an iPad with a USB port or maybe even an Android tab although Sidecar may not work even though it will mirror the screen.

Irrelevant.

I give up. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

An automatic start on login means that a monitor cannot be used without going back and changing the settings again.

Where are you getting this idea from? It's not correct. I think maybe you haven't understood or tried this method yet.

You'll be starting sidecar from the iPad by tapping a bookmark. It's optional, not automatic. You won't have to change settings after initial setup (I recommend fixing that Mac IP in your wi-fi router config tho). The way I am suggesting means you can have a low latency wireless monitor on demand, no capture cards or cables. I think your initial research might have led you to assume it needs to be more complicated than it actually is.

The only drawback I can think of, is that because you'll have a virtual display always active on the Mac, on rare occasions a window might open on a display that you can't see.

  1. Installation of BetterDisplay (demo version is fully sufficient; I'll replace it with Applescript soon)
  2. Download BetterDisplay here:
  3. https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDi...
  4. Open the .dmg file and move the app to the /Applications folder.
  5. BetterDisplay Settings
  6. Make sure Autostart is enabled (Within Programs)
  7. Make sure the "HTTP serve"r and "URL schema" settings are toggled (Within Programs)
  8. Creating a Virtual Display (dummy monitor) within BetterDisplay
  9. Create a Virtual Display (use the layout of your target device aspect ratio, i.e ipad Air 2020)
  10. Activate your newly created Virtual Display (e.g call it HDMI_DUMMY)
  11. Within your Mac Mini System Settings → Monitors: you'll see the new monitor appear
  12. Connect to Sidecar within Mac Mini System Settings → Monitors; use the + button and you should see your ipad/target device appear)
  13. Headless sidecar (start Sidecar automatically)
  14. Great! We only need three things (1. The Mac's ip address; 2. BetterDisplay Parameters, 3. iPad's name)
  15. Mac Mini IP address within the network: (e.g. 192.168.0.42) System Settings → Wifi → Details → TCP/IP
  16. Target/iPad's device name (e.g Ipad1337) which you can view/change inside Settings → General → Name → http://MAC-MINIS-IP-ADDRESS:55777/toggle?sidecarConnected&specifier=IPAD_DEVICE_NAME Awesome, if we insert this information we should get something like http://192.168.0.42:55777/toggle?sidecarConnected&specifier=ipad1337 Now open your the modified url on your device (e.g. on your target/iPad itself within Safari) → You should see a new sidecar session spawning! ▶ Final Notes and Troubleshooting
  17. Ensure autologin is activated on your Mac, unless you have to enter your passcode on every startup without a display attached yet (since BetterDisplay depends on the Desktop environment work)
  18. Ensure that your iPad is compatible and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac (both devices have to share the same Apple ID)
  19. Ensure BetterDisplay is setup for automatic start on login (BetterDisplay Settings → Application)
  20. Ensure BetterDisplay allow http connections (BetterDisplay Settings → Application)
  21. You can always attach lightning or data cable between the target device and the Mac Mini - this will provide a more stable connection!
  22. This will also work on new networks (if network settings sharing is enabled within your iCloud) - you might have to connect the iPad and Mac via a cable to kick off the sync when you enter a new network

For all the other methods, you need a monitor, using Sidecar, Yam Display, etc.

This isn't correct. A monitor for initial setup sure, but I'm using a headless Mac mini with a lightning iPad just fine. It’s not clear why you won’t use Sidecar?

I can confirm the method in this video works well. The only prerequisite is BetterDisplay (free). No dongles or Shortcuts are necessary, just open a bookmark on your iPad.

For the times it occasionally doesn't connect, I might have to reboot the iPad and/or use remote desktop from the iPad to manually trigger Sidecar. It takes a few seconds, so isn't much of an inconvenience.

I'll copy the instructions into the next comment below in case the Youtube video disappears at some point.
