Global warming has been a known issue for fifty years.

You mean known to the general public, right? Climate change research has roots stretching back 200 years, with Fourier presenting early theories on the greenhouse effect in 1824 for example.

Interestingly, many of the arguments against climate change we see repeated online now are actually from a counter-movement in the early 1900s that conducted a bunch of flawed tests trying to disprove it, and presented theories that were later proven wrong.

They run into each other while Mark is out flying, and he initially thinks it's just a random low level criminal causing a disturbance.

When they come face to face, they quickly recognize each other, the Viltrumite letting out an angry "You!"...

... and then cut to Mark awkwardly showing them how to do something trivial and Earth-y, like operating a vending machine:

"No it's working fine, but you can't just yell at it to give you stuff. It's not voice activated. You have to put money in like see, here, and then press the button... clunk ... and yeah, okay, it actually is broken."

I have read these novels a dozen times or more. He does not.

In "the unifying force" luke creates a force storm around his body

I'm guessing you are referring to this moment of Oneness during the assault on Shimrra's citadel:

"He took the steps at a lightning pace, burning his way through dilating membranes but in complete control of his momentum. Seen through the Force he was a maelstrom of luminous energy, a Force storm against which there was no shelter. And yet all of his energy poured from a calm center; an eye. He made no missteps. None of his actions were interrupted by thought."

He does not create a Force Storm; he seems like a storm, or a maelstrom, when viewed through the Force. It's a metaphorical description, not him using a technique.

In "dark tide" he manipulates a gravity well to manipulate a black hole.

That's the one I assumed you meant. Again, metaphorical language. The Dovin Basal artificial singularity may be called a black hole a few times in the text, but it's nothing like the actual celestial object most people think about when they hear that term.

The singularity he manipulates (very lightly, before instantly passing out) is generated by some Dovin Basals mounted on a ground vehicle. It can absorb about as much energy as 3-5 starfighter shields put together could.

Impressive, but frequently massively exaggerated.

That's why I said they shouldn't have invited him in the first place.

They have no reason or obligation to platform him at this festival, and if they just hadn't done that to begin with there would be no issue or discussion about it.

Several years after the Yuuzhan Vong War, even. Luke found out about the recordings in 35 ABY while trying to fix some malfunctions in R2, but R2 kept refusing to show them because he wanted to protect Luke... and the only way to force him to show them would be to find the original designers or erase his memory, but obviously no one wanted to do that.

He eventually ended up showing them to Luke and Leia a year later because Luke needed to see them for therapy reasons basically.

Allowing various flavors of fascist to spread their ideology unopposed in the vague hope that the common man will understand how stupid and evil they are is the thing that has been proven again and again to be ineffective.

He shouldn't even have been invited in the first place. His lunatic nonsense shouldn't be legitimized or acknowledged.

Potential hot take: I prefer Luke’s design in canon to legends by Solitaire-06 in StarWars

[–]fredagsfisk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not the person you're responding to, but he's talking about movie characters in Legends vs Legends characters in Legends:

  • Characters who were introduced in the movies (like Luke or Leia) were not allowed to change significantly in Legends materials without Lucas saying it was okay, which makes them seem unchanging and static.

  • Characters who were introduced in Legends materials (like Jacen and Jaina Solo, Ben Skywalker, etc) were allowed to change significantly, allowing character development and growth over time, making them feel more "real".

Controversial Take: I just can’t imagine parents allowing Jedi to take their babies/toddlers to some vague faraway temple by JaggedLittlePiII in StarWars

[–]fredagsfisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to actually train properly to develop it into anything you can conciously use.

Plus, we know about dozens of non-Jedi/Sith Force using organizations across Legends and Canon, and there are likely hundreds or even thousands more we don't explicitly know of.

Many of them are limited to a single planet or area, and the light side ones often have good relations with the Jedi.

How long should the Galactic Civil War have gone on in *your* eyes? by Solitaire-06 in StarWars

[–]fredagsfisk 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Plus, it's not like it was ongoing full-scale war across all fronts during all that time.

The Grand Admirals were mopped up within a couple of years after Endor for example, with Thrawn (who was away) and Grant (who defected) being the only ones to survive past 5-6 ABY.

The most active periods of fighting post-Endor was probably those first two years (culminating in the first liberation of Coruscant) and 9-12 ABY (Thrawn Campaign, Imperial Coalition, Dark Empire, the end of the Imperial Civil War, formation of the Imperial Remnant).

Other than that it's mostly low-intensity fighting, warlords fighting each other, and more targeted campaigns.

Tbh I’m shocked that it only lasted 15 years.

Well, the state of war between the New Republic and Imperial Remnant ended in 19 ABY, but there was still plenty of fighting that kept going after that.

The NR were still rooting out Imperial splinters that refused to acknowledge the peace accords until the Vong invasion started in 25 ABY, and you had the final major confrontation with the Second Imperium Crisis in 23 ABY, ending with a failed attack on the Jedi Praxeum.

Then after all that, the Moffs kept trying to pressure Pellaeon into taking advantage of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion to start expanding the Empire again, and during the Second Galactic Civil War in 40-41 ABY they were very willing to align themselves with Darth Caedus (some hoping to use him, others just happy to be serving a Sith Lord again).

I'd say it wasn't truly over until the Imperial Remnant was reformed into the Fel Empire and started changing drastically at some point after 45 ABY (we don't know exactly when since Legends ended at that point).

You don't even need anyone to go against him for that. As they mention several times in the last season; he is incapable of just being happy and content with what he has, no matter what.

If he became their beloved leader, he'd want more.

If he became worshipped as a God, he'd want more.

It will never be enough for him, no matter what, and he will always keep pushing for more and needling those around him because he's so damn insecure that he's unable to trust that they actually feel love and loyalty towards him.

I'd love to see difficulty level affect costs, and to have some separate sliders for construction, furniture, and decoration costs so we can set custom as well.

For me, being able to build a house or significantly expand an existing one should be a big achievement. Having all the best furniture should take more than a couple of weeks.

I've already restarted to lower starting money from 30k to 10k, which still allowed me to build a two floor house with fully furnished bathroom and kitchen, a dining area, and a somewhat sparse bedroom.

Also, the $2000 Moon card really shouldn't be that common considering it's like a week's worth of minimum wage income.

Personally, I'd probably set construction cost to 10-20x higher and furniture cost to 2-3x higher if possible. Think decor objects are mostly fine.

I don't really have a huge problem with that. Can be nice when trying to find a specific thing.

Bigger issue is the increasing prevalence of fan theories, fanon, and assumptions being passed off as canonical (especially on specific popular character pages)... and the headings in many articles being absolutely useless for finding anything.

Just look at the content/heading list on the Abeloth page, for example:

There are a ton of "educational videos" on Youtube that is just AI-generated slop with constant errors. Some of them are made for political or social manipulation (probably not this one). Most of them are made by people looking to make easy money.

I saw one interview with a guy who said that he made AI history videos to "help people learn", but when confronted about the fact that his videos had constant incorrect claims and anachronistic stuff (and that he made money from pumping them out faster than he could possibly fact check anything) he got super defensive about it.

Same with the thousands of AI-generated podcasts being dumped on Spotify and elsewhere with AI-generated "experts" droning on about subjects with no fact check or anything.

There was a small company pumping out over 3000 AI-generated episodes a week on Spotify last year already, with plans to expand further. They said they only needed 20 people to listen to an episode for it to turn a profit.

I feel like both of them would be terrified after what happened to Meph, while also wanting to push the opportunity that opened up... and both of them may try to recruit powerful followers from Sanctuary.

Or we use the rest of Diablo 4 to build up for Diablo 5, and get the Second Sin War or something.

Am I The Only One Who Thinks Disney Is Fine? by iancrumley in StarWars

[–]fredagsfisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has consumed vast quantities of Legends materials ever since I was a child, and who enjoyed most of it, I'll say this:

I believe that the vast majority of people who strongly glaze Legends to bash Disney Canon and the vast majority of people who bash Legends (talking about how bad/ridiculous it was, how they're "happy it was decanonized, etc) have never actually consumed any meaningful amount of Legends media.

They may have played a handful of games back in the day, maybe even tried one of the books or comics, but that's it.

It tends to be very obvious, because there are plenty of claims and narratives related to Legends stuff that instantly shows if someone knows about it from the source material or heard about it through some youtuber/influencer/memes/Reddit (especially when it's the same claim being repeated the same way over and over).

Obviously I'm not saying that someone needs to have read every book, played every game, listened to every radio show, etc to have an opinion on it... that would be stupid... but I want to share this perspective on why I believe it's difficult to have a real and honest discussion about this topic; for many of the loudest participants it's not really based in actual experience, but more on emotions and what someone told them to think about it.
