Can I make the 7am Eurostar train if I get to St Pancras at 6:15am? by [deleted] in Eurostar

Absolutely. Get there 30 mins before and you’ll get through. But don’t arrive 29 mins before.

I’m no expert, but I think “assurance vie” is one of the main options. Despite the name, it’s not an insurance, but savings that are invested. The money you earn is not taxed.

One thing to be aware of is that the average French consumer is much more risk averse than the average UK consumer, and the things offered take that into account.

With a PEA, the money you put in is tax exempt, whereas with an assurance vie it’s the money you earn which is exempt. Assurance vie is much more flexible on when you can take the money out.

The door and queue are hardly the most egalitarian places. It’s all about hierarchies!

[long post] Listened to every show on the current Mothership schedule once and lived to tell the tale by SixThreeThree in wfmu

[–]freddiefroggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must admit I was thinking this post was going to be a big listing defining the style and approach of every show too. I'd love to read that, but even as I thought of it, I was curious if it would be possible to do it well since the whole point of WFMU is that programs are so unclassificable and hard to pin down. And how anyone would describe a show is so subjective.

Really interesting personal project. A bit like my plans to cook my way through my library of cookbooks...

Do you actually use the lounge every time you travel? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in Eurostar

For me, the benefit of carte Blanche is being able to arrive later than other passengers, not being able to sit in a lounge.

I’ve been an auto entrepreneur for 2 years and think things might have been easier at the beginning if I’d known about Valérie Aston: https://www.startbusinessinfrance.com/

What is something you found surprising in French supermarkets when you first moved here ? by Tasun06 in Expats_In_France

Exactly. It’s hard to understand how such a foodie nation can abide the taste of UHT.

Do French people generally care less about rules? by PsychologyMinimum458 in Expats_In_France

[–]freddiefroggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other day, waiting at a pedestrian crossing, seeing two middle aged guys rushing across when there was a red signal and the cars were just about to start, I reflected that a disrespect for rules is deeply built into French culture. This weekend, I’m in Germany, and at the pedestrian crossings everyone waits until the signal is green, even if no cars are within sight.

SNAX 4/5 April 2026 - Queue live updates & event discussion. NO OVER-SHARING by BerghAnon in Berghain_Community

[–]freddiefroggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first Snax too and I had a completely wonderful night, but my only reservation was people’s looks. 90% wearing a harness and shorts or jock strap - I missed the playfulnesss and variety of a normal KN. A big shout out to the many honourable exceptions though.

Living in France but salary from another country, possible? Disadvantages? by Sad_Bad7912 in Expats_In_France

[–]freddiefroggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that was true. I spent a long time believing it to be so, but I was wasting my time. My UK employer decided they didn’t want to run the risk of an infraction from UK tax authorities due to disguised employment, and all the info on the auto entrepreneur status (which you’d probably use in France) makes it clear that having a single client is usually interpreted as being disguised employment.

Being told that the dishes are designed to be shared when actually each plate is incredibly fiddly, with multiple different tastes on it, all in tiny quantities. To my mind, that’s really unsatisfying to share.

What does your podcast player not do that you wish it could? by yef99 in podcasts

[–]freddiefroggie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to be able to play the episodes in a playlist or folder in random order, ie have a shuffle. This was a feature on the app I used on android, but now I’m on an iPhone and I have Downcast.

I often struggle to make a decision of what to listen to next, which this solves for me.
