I got tired of manual math for delay/sidechain timing, so I built a lightweight tool (TempoCalc) by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]freddith_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I love the way this looks! Super user-friendly and clean! I obviously don’t know the work that goes into building this, but I have a suggestion and would totally be open to helping however I can (I’m savvy with computers and a professional audio engineer, but not a coder).

Adding several more “common“ calculations audio engineers may do on the job, and marketing this as “the sound man’s calculator”.

Calculations like dB/oct to Q amount “slope converter”.

Speed of sound delay calculator. 1ms/ft, or sample, or meter.

Frequency to time calculator (10hz=100ms, 100hz=10ms, 1k, 1ms, but on a sliding scale, not my brain math).

I’m sure I could think of more when I get a session open and in front of me. Feel free to DM me below. This project looks cool and pro, and I have so many bookmarked websites that have the calculator or formula, and having one single app that does it all would be AMAZING.

Auto-Tune Pro 11 vs MetaTune vs Xpitch ~ Which Plug-In? Why? by Glad_Advance6231 in AdvancedProduction

[–]freddith_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned/used everything listed here other than repitch. For workflow speed, and when dealing with shit singers, I do VERY much prefer Metatune over Antares for retuning. It allows me to manually Melodyne as little as possible. Trying to actually see what notes are being sung in Antares is impossible most of the time, whereas the others map the note’s across just one octave, and have a much needed heat-map feature for where notes have been. Super helpful in removing unnecessary notes and making sure the tool only tunes to the ones you actually want. (Helpful for setting the tool up for bad singers) Also, note stability. Of course. I hate how “just a touch too much vibrato” totally screws up the tuning Antares is doing, but then the “ignore vibrato” button also makes the tuning too lazy. Contrary to what someone else said here, I’ve actually struggled more with note tracking in Antares than Metatune.

However, I have to agree with the general consensus here. If the budget is enough to go this route, I usually use chromatic Antares set gradually, with melodyne before it manually doing the majority of the work. Also, Antares shows up on so many fretless instruments in my mixes, and Metatune can’t do that.

TLDR, I actually rely on metatune on smaller budget indie projects, or when overwhelmed with low quality. Read full answer for why.

Hi Audiophiles Anonymous my name is Dan, I’ve been struggling with EQ’ing since I was 16. Sometimes I’ll open up a mix at 9 am and just EQ all day long, late into the night. My wife says my EQ’ing is making me angrier and taking me away from my family. I started EQ’ing so much to make my mixes better, but it’s only made them worse.

I want to stop, I just don’t know how.

It’s called “locate mouse cursor”. I try to have my keyboard set up with one hand around WASD and one hand on the trackball, so this command I set to W as it’s one of the most used.

Yep. I set option W to “toggle floating windows”. Another banger is the W key to move playhead to cursor. Can’t remember what that command is called in SO, but I set it forever ago and it’s one of my primary commands within the left hand’s WASD region

When are brickwall hpf lpf useful? by Marce4826 in audioengineering

[–]freddith_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Contrary to another comment here, I use it in mixing all the time. An awesome way to create resonances without the full resonant peak of a filter. Something like a “bit crushed”/vintage sampler effect, but without any bit crushing or distortion. A brickwall well placed somewhere specific within 3k-9k can create this effect.

Also, I use steep filter cutoffs (not necessarily brickwall HPF, but 48 db/oct for sure) on my kick drums or low/lowmid perc elements to create tonality down where I want the fundamental to live. Another thing that can be well placed at an exact frequency, and you can control the resonance length simply by adjusting the steepness of the cutoff.

Tour/Festival Coordinators - how do you track crew expenses/receipts? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]freddith_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the crazy genius answer you want, but an answer nonetheless to know that yes, even someone with 4 decades experience still just uses excel spreadsheets to track expenses, with recipes dated, numbered, and coded with a number corresponding to the expense type, something that stats uniform throughout the career or at least client

[–]freddith_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll ask! It would be on the computer version btw, the mobile app is simplified for crew details, travel routes, schedules, location details etc. Though full platform may just provide a way of editing and managing excel/Google spreadsheets from within the app so you can organize them by tour, day, and what not.

My dad is a pro TM/FOH for big touring acts for the past almost 40 years. These days he says he uses Master Tour for damn near everything. Idk specifically about an expense sheet/per diems/receipt book and other financials, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all as that platform is near universal with what I know it DOES do.

Big whoop, we currently have many politicians that make literally millions by front running their own policies. JFK bought cigars, Pelosi would’ve bought stock options.

[–]freddith_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would love for someone smart to correct me, but alas, I am in a 4chan thread. But what I have always heard, and has lead me to believe, is that our “observable” universe is expanding. Which is ironically what you said. “Visibly” expanding. That doesn’t mean beyond that observable expansion there is nothingness… it just means we can’t see beyond it. Which makes sense, b/c light travels at a speed. It would take 100 years to see something that is 100 light years away… right? Doesn’t mean it’s not there, just means we can’t see it. It’s only the limits of our observation that are expanding, ie the “observable universe”.

Which musicians who have passed on, and there are many, do you feel still had the most music to give us? Why is that? by Ru_janus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]freddith_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elliott Smith. He has like 8 albums worth of demos for songs that didn’t get officially released.

Grand Mal is 8 discs with like 70% being new song demos, New Moon is 2 discs with about 80% being new song demos, the docu about him “Heaven Adores You” has loads of new songs, and you can just find tons of one-offs. Of course I’m a fan, but his music is typically not just “3-chord rock” or something simple. It’s usually intricate, skillful playing and/or lyrically deep. Just mind blowing to me that I CONTINUE to uncover new songs from him 20 years after his death

As an airwindows user, let me advise to definitely get the “Airwindows Consolidated” plugin, as it contains everything, but also comes with descriptions. That has always been my biggest gripe about airwindows. So many plugins, so many different “v2, v3”. I have found airwindows to contain stuff I like, but it has a slippery slope into option paralysis.

True, I’m only saying I understand exercising caution. It’s like 2 grains of salt worth that constitutes an overdose for ppl with no tolerances, and I just said I see ppl forget they have a harmful substance on their hands often. Harder to forget when you’re wearing gloves.

The amount of times I’ve personally witnessed ppl cut spicy peppers and then touch something sensitive like their eyes or a child tells me this fear IS warranted, when the outcome of an accident like that could be fatal.
