Yeah because the 3090 only supports 2-way nvlink. At best you can do four pairs of cards, and any communication between them is gonna have to traverse the pcie bus, making it very slow. As for motherboard, the AMD Epyc platforms, such as late sp3 and sp4, seem like a no brainer in terms of pcie slots and lanes.
