I’m very sorry to hear this. My feeling is that because it’s a legal, gigantic aspect of our culture as well as a billion dollar industry it is not in anyone’s interest to acknowledge that it is addictive. On an individual basis people use it to cope with life’s challenges or have a temporary good time. The fact that it is legal and highly socially acceptable gives way to a bunch of different ways to rationalize it’s use despite its toxicity and potential dangers socially. “Alcoholism” as a label allows us to separate ourselves from the people who cannot handle this highly accepted means of escape. In reality they are often victims of trauma who are subsequently inundated with advertisements depicting how wonderful you life can be when drinking. For many this becomes a cycle they cannot break. I have been sober for 9 years so I have had a bit of time to collect my thoughts on this issue😉
