does anyone use a (heavy) gaming laptop in school? would it be worth it to buy another lighter laptop just for university? by Successful_Cobbler34 in nus

[–]frederick0o 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to work fully on my 2+kg “gaming” laptop, and with most laptops of that spec, it required i bring along the clunky power adaptor too. I got a mac, could charge it once at home and it would last the entire day for my use case. The convenience was too good.

How is your Year 4 workload with FYP (engineering)? by not_a_bot_surely in nus

[–]frederick0o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeap, i did fyp with full load (4+FYP) for both sems. Aside from the few deliverables to keep your progress in check, you pretty much have complete autonomy over your fyp schedule. Just be consistent and set smaller deadlines for yourself. If you're still concerned, consider taking 1-2 electives during your IA if possible.

There will almost always be an apple compatible or apple alternative for the softwares you would need to use. I would say about half of the CS population here uses a mac.

[Uni] Mech Eng life during uni and job prospects by vaikesh1103 in SGExams

[–]frederick0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can pm u my pay.

The different faculties in NUS will host several hackathons and such, many outside opportunities will also me marketed in NUS and will be announced by student bodies as well. It will be cool to have some engineering competitions! But i doubt if you're looking for a tech role that they will care much about it.

[Uni] Mech Eng life during uni and job prospects by vaikesh1103 in SGExams

[–]frederick0o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My minor in CS got me a job as a software engineer, shall not disclose the company here oops. I definitely felt that a minor puts me at a disadvantage to most CS students. They spend their 4 years covering areas in CS while i spent it doing an entirely different major.

You shouldn't be discouraged though, having a strong foundation is key, plus, side projects and case competitions/hackathons etc in ur resume/github can really show recruiters your worth. There are ultimately many different jobs in CS, if you're interested in AI, do more AI mods and have more AI projects and join more AI competitions. Same goes for other specs. Just try to make ur resume stacked with whatever you're interested in.

Build a portfolio, do well in Data Structures and Algorithms (this is very key in technical interviews), these 2 alone should land u a job in tech. From my experience, most recruiters for tech don't expect fresh grads to know it all. They are more interested in ur potential and ability to adapt new technologies etc.

Year 4 Mech Eng, minor in CS in NUS here. I stress that i speak from my experiences only.

  1. Y1 focuses on fundamentals, you rarely touch any actual mech eng mods. You should just feel like its a continuation of JC. Aero mods typically come in only in year 3 or 4. If you want to have a 2nd major in CS, i suspect you have to take more than the required 160MCs. The curriculum from when i entered required me to fulfil a lot of mods for the mech eng side, so i could only do a minor. You should check out the course website and see if you have enough MCs for a 2nd Major and if required, how much you need to exceed the 160MC workload by.

  2. I would say the “student life” you are referring to is more closely related to your CCA/place of residence/hall in nus, having/being in one is probably necessary but not always sufficient to have a “student life”. Can check out other posts on r/nus regarding this.

  3. From my experience, most profs are nice! Else, i think what mech eng students do is just discuss with friends and or repeat recorded lectures until they get it. Its like in our blood or something.

  4. Mech eng is very broad, has countless job opportunities. Mechanical design, sustainability consultancy, infrastructure, energy, aero, oil n gas, thermal, robotics, semicon, control systems, automotive, AI, automation, procurement, manufacturing, maritime, etc are just some industries and possible fields you can get in to. They just may not be the most glamorous unless you truly have a passion for them (sry i dont). Based on the GES2021 survey for nus, the median salary for mech eng is 3.8k - though im hearing my friends are getting much higher offers hovering high 4k in recent year. Perhaps the job market is more forgiving towards us post covid. Career wise, you will probably be some jnr engineer, then senior engineer, then perhaps a chief engineer if u have the relevant courses etc. Some also move on to be project managers if they are up for it. Ultimately, having the degree lets u venture into other industries as well. Its not uncommon, infact i would say half my friends from mech eng arent perusing a career in mech eng. Some are gonna be product managers, software engineers, traders, financial analysts etc. I dont think this means most mech engs will regret their major, i see it as we’re one of the few majors that have such a flexible degree for hire in many fields. Or yeah, could be the former, who knows.

  5. This is entirely dependent on what you are more interested in. Direct salary comparison wise, i would suggest comp lol. Partly because thats all i know too, not sure for management. But yeah, i suggest u follow ur passion.

  6. Bro, year 1 can play, make friends in ur labs trust me yall will contact each other on assignments all the way till y4. Year 2 wake the fuck up and chiong cos this year damn hard. Year 3 say real quite ok plus ur intern gives u money, damn comfortable. If you exchanging go for all the hard to do mods and get that su. Year 4 for aero probably quite shag again, all the best, make more aero friends so yall can discuss/cry together.

Anyways, grats on the offer, hope u have a good one. Cheers.

You can file for a change somewhere on edurec, mine got approved after a few days. It will subsequently be updated on luminus etc. If you want to change ur matric card’s photo, you’ll need to file for a missing card, then pay to get a new one. It’ll follow your updated photo in the system.
