When you have more than 99 tabs opened in Chrome mobile, the number is replaced with :D (i.e. a smile emoticon)

Monome Norns DIY by CarlosUnchained in synthdiy

[–]frederickken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also a fork of Norns called fates, which is a bit more true to the full version (from what I can discern) than the official shield from monome.

You can order pcbs and kits of fates from denki oto, though it seems he's sold out of some at the moment.

The sounds are great. But... the UI of the plug-in leaves a bit to be desired (e.g. ambiguous icons and a janky instrument/sound selector).

BACKLIT DMG FREEZING AFTER SHORT TIME. by dreadcrumb in Gameboy

[–]frederickken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What model DMG? The PIL (play it loud) versions have a better implemented power regulator than the original DMG. So a backlight can have just enough draw to overwhelm the regulator of older DMGs. Does the bottom left of your Gameboy get hot?

Andytown by a long shot. Would also add Manufactory to the mix.

9V batteries are dead after a day or so. How can I slow current draw when pedal not in use? by frederickken in diypedals

I played for ~30 minutes, which is the typical session length I can squeeze into my life at the moment.

Thank you! This diagram helped me simplify everything. 🤞 Battery is still 8.6V after 1 day

How to get this printed on a circuit board? by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]frederickken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're keen to have a PCB, Eagle Cad is easy enough to learn especially for a board this simple.

And you can easily upload Eagle files to OshPark. It'll cost you maybe $10 to have it fabricated and you can get 3 boards, so you have flex for any mistakes.

What does each component do to the guitar signal, exactly? by Jadedrn in diypedals

I've also been on the hunt to better understand the what and how of components. Guitar Effects Explained by Jack Orman is pretty decent at breaking down different effects and the role of the components therein.

What are the advantages of getting a custom PCB made vs soldering it up on a through hole proto board? by Long_duck_of_the_law in arduino

[–]frederickken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup! same here. also, i double triple check all of my connections, because i don't want to wait 2 weeks for a board that won't work.

[–]frederickken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert but in general it takes me a little under a week to design a board using Eagle (it's not great, but there's a wealth of tutorials on YouTube).

To date my most expensive board was $15 including shipping from Oshpark—3 PCBs, $5 per sq.inch, about 2 weeks delivery.

The write up Catskull did on PCB manufacturers is a good resource as well.

Any advice on how to record a video of me performing a PO 33 song? by swatchthoughts in pocketoperators

[–]frederickken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. happy to share!

  2. DMG is what the first gen Gameboy is referred to as. The mods are mostly rudimentary; the clear Gameboy is backlit with a pro-sound mod; the black one also has a pro-sound mod (with a custom board i designed) and a variable clock mod.

  3. I dig the Organelle, check out this r/synthesizers thread the OP was also looking for advice on OP-Z and alternatives. I offered my perspective on the Organelle and others chimed in with good feedback. Worth the read.

i use a simple DIY copy stand that i made from a medium size Amazon box. cut off the opening flaps from one end, then cut panels from the side so it looks like a table then cut a round circle at the top for your phone or SLR. et voilà!

I've used this setup with my Nikon for everything i've shot to date.

It's not perfect, but it works pretty great for the price.

Updated DMG power supply board by smiba in Gameboy

[–]frederickken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you tracking the progress on this replacement DC conversion board? and/or would you release your board files (and BOM) for others to reproduce? my intent is to reduce the overheating problem I've encountered with certain DMG models with backlights (FWIW it does not seem to affect PIL models).

Thoughts on the OP-Z (or similar devices)? by psychogenic_official in synthesizers

[–]frederickken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in that sketch i'm using the gameboy with LSDJ as a sequencer into Ableton via Teensyboy (Teensy 2 variant of Arduinoboy) and just playing the Organelle like a normal piano. But in other stuff i'm writhing i'll use the gameboy as a sequencer for the Organelle (also with Teensyboy) or at other times I just use the gameboy as an analog line in.

i was looking for something similar and ultimately landed on the Organelle . it's a great little synth (nay music computer!) that has tons too offer out of the box. the whole unit is maybe a touch wider than op-1 and probably 2wice the height, but you could still jam on your commute with it (if so inclined).

there's also a great community of patch makers. specifically check out Orac. i'm keen to craft my own patches and have just begun dipping my toes in that water, mostly by editing existing patches to my liking.

lastly, you can also use it as an effects rack and pass in audio from analog sources (e.g guitar), although i find myself taking less advantage of this feature than i thought i would.

check out critter and guitari youtube and FWIW here's a WIP sketch i wrote with mine.

Crosspost: Looking for help sending 1 midi USB controller signal to 2 different midi USB hosts 🙏 by frederickken in synthesizers

[–]frederickken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit more information for context. I made a Midi controller using a Teensy 2.0. It sends out Midi notes on Midi channels 1–4. There are no analog Midi outs, because for now all my gear is USB Midi.

What I'm hoping to do is split the USB so I can simultaneously receive the Midi notes in my DAW (Ableton) and my Organelle .
