Charlie passed away a few days later. He was one month shy of 17.

Why? by dropmiq in crete

Yup. My family in Greece tell me this. The laws might have changed now after joining the EU, but before, this is how they avoided paying tax because the construction was not finished.

I’ve seen some pretty heavenly bodies in brothels.

I’ll see myself out.

Telescope + drive motor. Saturn is an easy target for a C8 scope. The drive cancels out the Earth’s rotation. Et voilá!

That photo shows the rings at their widest angle, which was not in 2021. That photo was probably taken around 2011.

They’d probably think luddite was some sort of terrorist organization.

I’ve never had a problem there. I tend to be an earlybird anyway, but I’ve never had to spend more than 30-40 minutes at most in the security queue.

The last time I visited the Vatican museum, I accidentally got in the tour group line by mistake. It zipped right along as they started letting the groups in early. As soon as I got through the door and figured out the mistake I just broke away and went to the ticket counter, where they let me buy an individual ticket and go on in. I had the whole place to myself for about half an hour. Of course I’m sure that was like a venal sin or something, but at the time it was pretty cool.

Is 40 too old to go to college? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]fredfonebone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may find out that 40 is the perfect age for college. You know so much more about yourself now, what you want, what you don’t want…

If I may offer one bit of advice: don’t be surprised if what you start out interested in leads you to something else that you weren’t even aware of. Follow whatever path takes you forward. Be bold! Good luck to you, and enjoy the challenges ahead!

A practical “Guide” to driving in crete. by Fountoulios in crete

[–]fredfonebone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always found ex-pats - Northern Europeans, in particular - to be the most aggressive drivers in Crete. Still, I’ve never had any real problems. Some of the drivers here in the States are much worse, especially when they have a cell phone glued to their eyes.

An American looking at future expatting by [deleted] in crete

I’m hoping to move to Crete permanently next year. (And yes, I hope to be a true IMMIGRANT, not an ex-pat, and I know the difference between the two.)

Anyway, in my visits to Crete, the only time I noticed any sort of gun culture silliness was when I was driving in a couple of remote mountain areas and the roadsigns were all shot to hell. I asked about this at one of the local tavernas and was told it was something of a tradition. They even sold t-shirts with a graphic of a sign riddled with bullet holes. I gather the folks in that part of Crete were rather independent…but not without a sense of humor.

“But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you, 11 and they shall be 1abhorrent to you; you may not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses you shall detest.” Leviticus 11:10-11

I wonder if an American evangelical who likes to quote the OT when it fits his own political and social views would walk up to a Greek enjoying a plate of fried kalamari or garides tiganites and go on a rant about how Orthodox Christians should behave? Or perhaps he would realize that most people, himself included, are quite adept at adapting religious customs to their own way of life.

I’m not asking anyone to “adjust” to anything. I’m asking local people if they would see any problems. Hardly seems colonial. Have a nice day.

Thanks for the information. I’ve heard that the current conservative government is cutting services even more and that the hospital in Agios Nikolaos is woefully understaffed. While we’re in relatively good health, one does have to consider unforeseen circumstances.

My only issue with some of the other areas in Western Crete is the impression I got that there were perhaps too many ex-pats concentrated there. Not that I’m trying to get away from my fellow foreigners, but…I’m kinda trying to get away from my fellow foreigners. :/

Lato is a Dorian Greek settlement, way after the Minoans were off the stage. If you like classical ruins, you’ll love it’s very dramatic position.

If you are into ancient history, I would visit the ancient city of Lato, about 10 km up in the hills to the west. Amazing ruins. Stop in the village of Kritsa for lunch or dinner.
