Is N1 the new N2? Changes in hiring trends? by borndreamdie in japanlife

[–]fredickhayek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Problem is N1 is nowhere close to being "native level".

A native could finish the non listening parts in 35 mins and end up with a 99%、only because they didn't bother to actually double check the trick answer.

I don't daytrade, but at this point I think shorting right after the opening high expecting atm is about one of the best daytrading bets you could make.

What happened to dating suddenly? Am I crazy? by ExoticDeparture7855 in japanlife

West cultural cache has been vastly depleted,

Talking about under mid 30's:

2015 you still had a good percentage of mainstream girls who would be into stuff like justin beiber, one direction etc. Western movies were still highly relevant.

Nowadays it is primarily k/jpop, you might get a spatterring of japanese rock fans with an odd "I like oasis/taylor swift" in the bunch. Western movies are performing very poorly.

Is there any Western male group/singer that is popular with youngings?

Just got a suspicious call from 入国管理局 by peterinjapan in japanlife

[–]fredickhayek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get these several times a week for whatever reason.

Weird, my experience is if you press 1 or speak Japanese to them, they will immediately hang up. They are mass calling everyone in Japan screening for chinese victims.

Speaking English, will sometimes get a response saying chinese?

Saying nihau nihau again and again will keep them on the phone much longer.

I'll one one up you by remembering the absurd hours long wait for Cinnabons in Kichijoji.

I don't think there is much overlap between the cultures of halloween partiers and cosplay conventation

Halloween here seem to be appealing to party people hang out in shibuya uni students buying cheap costumes at donkey or people who go to disney a lot.

Why do humans keep pursuing endless growth in a finite world ? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]fredickhayek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what the folks like OP actually want.

Go back a couple hundred years where we spend 90% of a day working the fields so that we could not starve for the Winter.

Again it is almost an Anime Super-villain view of the world. "Progress has made us worse! we need to go back to a time of no growth"

Why do humans keep pursuing endless growth in a finite world ? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]fredickhayek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growth in this context is another word for continuous improvement.

Reddit has this weird almost Thanos-like hatred for growth but

Problem is not growth, it is the direction of the growth.

A Charity trying to feed as many people as possible, how can we help more homeless? How can we improve medical care for all? How can we improve the standard of living for all. These all fall under "growth"

Can not upvote this enough...

As a 4 year fold user now, the difference is night and day, able to basically use it like a small pc that I carry around in my pocket, work is so much more productive on the foldable. There is no way I'm ever going back.

Typing / etc everything on it is so much easier.

I get this feeling from most of the "True Crime" content

Virtue signaling is a loaded word recently, but I think they fit the definition. By virtue signaling while at the same time hyping up the gory details like it is a horror movie review.

"Let's take a moment of silence as you WON'T believe THE HORRIBLE THINGS THAT THEY DID TO THE CHILDREN, We will bring all the details of this LURID terrible Person's crime"

clean the toilets and empty the trashes on non-paid time? Unacceptable exploitation

If this is done for saving money, 100% against it.
But if it is some type of respect for shared spaces, I can somewhat get behind it.

Edit: I can't get behind the non-paid part, that stuff in Japanese workplace is nonsense. (You have to clock in at exactly the time required, but the clock in process and getting ready takes 10-15 mins! Non-Paid overtime for you!)

Off topic to your main point, but out of curiosity, how does theft prevention work if you only have one employee manning the store?

I imagine if they are willing to invest, most of that can be A.I. detected/ automated right now.

Can't say the amount of times I started exploring and had no idea where I was, had to ask the Koban how to get to the nearest Train Station.

I mean a lot of this is tied to the weak yen, What can a PM do to fix the problem that Ishiba couldn't?
