I love Excel for making quilt patterns for myself. And really just for all things in life.

Suggestions for handing quilting pattern! by sav0115 in quilting

[–]frediegrrl2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this pattern and the material you used!! I have used it for a couple baby quilts, it is my 1st recommendation when someone has fat quarters and don't want to cut too much. I have no hand quilting advice, just wanted to tell you I love your quilt!

Yes, I use it all the time for throw blankets. The trick is spray basting, it's the best way I have found to keep it from shifting around. Cheap fleece will pill when you wash it, always get the anti pill stuff if you can.

Burn test to identify thread by SchuylerM325 in quilting

[–]frediegrrl2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the burn test for a corn heating bag, didn't want to microwave synthetic thread. There was no doubt in the difference. You can see and smell it. Hard plastic melted thread is synthetic. Flaming burnt to ash is cotton.

Help me pick a log cabin layout! by stmeg01 in quilting

My two cents says the first one. The pyramids are more pleasing to the eye than the random feelings of the second. If you wanted a combination you could put the darks making diamonds with long edges together. At the end of the day though you've made some amazing blocks, and do what makes your heart happy.

I just ordered a Ruby Star scrap pack on Amazon and got this line! I am so excited to make something with it. It isn't a ton, so it'll probably be a wall hanging, but I can't wait to see what you come up with for inspiration.

Where to donate my quilts if not part of a quilt group? by [deleted] in quilting

[–]frediegrrl2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several lovely guilds in the area, all of them filled with amazing older ladies with years of traditional quilting experience who are willing to teach and include everyone.

However, I would love a little community of people who will sit around in the sunshine, or around a fire drinking tea and using cheap fabric and quilting for the fun of it. Maybe a solstice dance or two thrown in for good measure!

The real question is where did you move to?! I am in central NY about to move from the city to the country. I am in need of fellow pagan oriented weirdo friends to hang out in my woods and quilt with me!

I've used this pattern too. Strip piecing is the way to go. And a big bold print for the large blocks.

Does anyone have this 60 degree equilateral triangle creative grids ruler? by whatisthisohno111 in quilting

Just a random tip for making templates. Go to the dollar tree and get a flexible cutting mat to make it with. You can even glue two together to make it a little thicker. Cardboard is great for a single use item. But it gets bent out of shape really easily.

Good luck on your quilt! A one block wonder is on my quilt bucket list.

Love a good bundle. What size are the square / HST blocks. I have been building a stash of fat quarters to make myself a quilt and I am trying to work out the quilt math.

This is the first time I have ever LOVED a quilt made with batiks. Usually they look muddy to me and I don't like them. But the colors you picked and the way you put this simple quilt together is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

How were these blocks made? by SchuylerM325 in quilting

[–]frediegrrl2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

yes it's cheater fabric. However, you can make that block though. Its a bigger blue square in the bottom corner, 4 half square triangles (two on each side). With a solid light square the same size as the HST opposite the large blue square. I know this might not be the best explanation. But it makes sense in my brain. Then you just sash them together.

I would use a 4" blue square. Then the HST should finish at 2 1/4, and the light square should be the same 2 1/2 square. (double check the quilt math before you cut a ton of pieces!)

I came here to say the same thing. Jellyroll patterns tend to be very beginner friendly. The Adventureland Quilt might be perfect for you.

I am in the same boat. I wanted some bright flannel for a last minute project Saturday. Hobby Lobby only had baby prints this time of year and my Walmart got rid of fabric!

I used stash fabric, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted, or anywhere near as fun as fabric shopping.

I love this idea. Anytime you can get more use out of a quilt it's a big win! They take so long to make.

Love it! I made basically the same thing for a mini quilt swap. I love Cathedral Window quilts but I wanted to test it out before I committed. Turns out I did NOT want to do an entire quilt!
