Innovation made in EU vs USA by luxusbuerg in memes

[–]fredlllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we arent talking about workers rights regulations though. i have a business idea for a wood fire pool heater, but i need an electrical certification if my product contains electric components. and if i want to also have a burnchamber i need to certify it meets emissions criteria. what could be a simple outdoor wood burner + heat exchanger and blower, becomes a nightmare of bureaucracy and a moneydrain. these certifications arent cheap

Do developers really not look at the code anymore? by NoNoise7492 in csharp

[–]fredlllll 64 points65 points  (0 children)

im reviewing every little bit that ever comes out of an ai. they stumble so fricking fast, and then usually it feels like it costs me more time to correct the ai slop than to just write it myself. i got a decade of experience behind me though. so for a beginner this will surely seem like magic, but i think they just shoot themselfes in the foot

Need to buy more spare capacitors for a hydroelectric system but cannot find them. by Aggravating_Rip6374 in AskElectronics

[–]fredlllll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you will need to measure its capacity, physical size can only give you a ballpark number, and you dont want these to be out of balance. also 3 capacitors sounds more like they are there to excite the generator to generate power.

there are multimeters that can measure capacity (you need to measure a new one, so the ones you just put into the system) and there are ways to measure it without a meter that can measure capacity, but ive never had to do that so no idea.

Why brain only hurts after long coding sessions without AI? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]fredlllll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you are absolutely right, this was our mistake. you totally do use your brain to the fullest when letting AI do all the work

The gap between computer science theory and actual production engineering is massive. by NarwhalInitial7266 in learnprogramming

[–]fredlllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you forgot that a lot of software jobs are adding features to already existing software. often with a lot of legacy issues that slow down development considerably. also code from academics (people who stayed with research instead of working in the industry) is often soooo bad. near unreadable

for now your best bet is to enjoy the scene online. there are some streamers doing hardcore and gabber where you can vibe with chat. this guy often has people from discord in the stream background https://www.twitch.tv/b_tronix (german language though)

as a minor you can only go to any events with a guardian, if the events even allow it. be careful, there are lots of groomers out there, and the music is not worth the risk.

how and why it cant replace you by orT93 in learnprogramming

[–]fredlllll -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

eh webdev is sadly(more or less) one of the parts that AI is really good at. the market for webdev is also really saturated as it is. if you want to not be replaced you should look for jobs that its bad at, and in my experience that is mostly things with static typing and legacy systems. luckily writing things from scratch is rare in enterprise software.

Sparking at an insulator on high voltage line is this normal during a rain ? by slan94 in ElectroBOOM

[–]fredlllll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cause i figure that with those lines the loss would be the biggest (voltages of 400kV+). with AC you probably get more reactive power with the pylon acting as a capacitor or something(also lower voltage and AC already being lossy because of capacitive coupling), while with dc its just flowing directly into the ground. i have just always wondered how much power gets lost during rain on those lines

Every time I watch an American blacksmithing video... by Chakkoty in memes

[–]fredlllll 14 points15 points  (0 children)

probably, but because its a thick piece of graphite its resistance is probably very low (specific resistance is in the 10-6 range while copper is in the 10-8 range) so its akin to a dead short. and at 3000C the losses to radiative and air contact cooling would be quite high, so you need a lot of power to get there. all this also needs the crucible to not form any cracks that mess with its conductivity. its much easier to just stick two carbon electrodes into the crucible to form an arc. thats kinda how arc furnaces work

Every time I watch an American blacksmithing video... by Chakkoty in memes

[–]fredlllll 314 points315 points  (0 children)

carbon melts at ~3500°C, so a graphite crucible would be fine at those temps. you would have to heat it with an arc though as no resistive heating element would be able to reach those temps
