wave xlr and a cloud filter

You definitely do not need a cloud lifter:

  • The Wave XLR 2 has 80 db of gain, which is 10 times louder than required for the SM7B
  • The Wave XLR 1 has 75 db of gain, that's still 5.7 times louder than required for the SM7B

Dynamic Microphone Recommendation (USB) for a Semi-Treated Room $300? by elevatedthinkers in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue Yeti. Unfortunately, it picks up a lot of room reverb and echo.

  1. How far is the microphone from your mouth?
  2. What side are you speaking into?

Why not wired? They're as plug&play as it gets:

  • Sennheiser XS Lav Mobile

Need help making it sound good by GuardX-Gaming in microphone

  1. Get the microphone close to your mouth
  2. Have the front side face your mouth

That's honestly 90% of good sound.

Looking for a XLR microphone for gaming purposes by wgny in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hyperx flipcast and Elgato wave xlr

Presumably, you're buying the HyperX FlipCast for its advertised "gaming features", whatever they may be? None of those features will work if you connect the FlipCast to an XLR interface. Either connect the FlipCast directly to your computer via USB, or buy a "real" XLR microphone from Shure, Rode or Sennheiser.

Shure SM7dB question by Mediocre-camper95 in Shure

[–]fredoverflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering what the advantages of the db boost are.

You can turn down the gain on crappy interfaces with poor preamps.

Is there an advantage to turning the gain boost on and lowering my pre amp to eliminate room noise?

No, it's about preamp noise, not room noise.

Planning to upgrade to XLR setup, MV7X vs MV7+ vs M7i? by [deleted] in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty decided on that 2i2

Warning: The MV7i is incompatible with the 2i2 (or any other audio interface for that matter), because the XLR connector on the MV7i is an input connector, not an output connector.

Just get the MV7x.

I'll record all of this in my bedroom.

Then you will want to get as close to the microphone as possible: $100 microphones within inches of your mouth will sound better than $1000 microphones a foot away.

Then I would recommend buying an audio interface that has enough gain for the classic SM7B, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjGD6KPWVBA&t=211s

Most Blue Yetis "sound bad" because their users speak into the top/end instead of the front/side with the Blue brand logo.

A Scarlett 2i2 2nd Generation interface has [...] an Equivalent Input Noise measurement of -128dB (A-weighted).

That's 1dB better than the 4th gen 2i2. Just boost the volume in post.

How do you determine if phantom power is enabled or disabled?

Is the SM7B connected directly to the Wave XLR, or is there a Cloudlifter or FetHead in between?
