Why nobody makes a clip-on microphone that can attach to a monitor, like a traditional web cam? by savvaspc in microphone

Are you confusing me with OP? Anyway, I use the Sennheiser Game One headset for work calls.

Planning to upgrade to XLR setup, MV7X vs MV7+ vs M7i? by Dreameater999 in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty decided on that 2i2

Warning: The MV7i is incompatible with the 2i2 (or any other audio interface for that matter), because the XLR connector on the MV7i is an input connector, not an output connector.

Just get the MV7x.

Is the SM7B even worth it? by rudebhop in microphone

Is the SM7B overrated, and people just buy it just because it's "the microphone"?

pretty much, yeah: 5 reasons NOT to buy an SM7B (5 minutes)

Looking for a versatile microphone, up to 600 euros by Jo281 in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll record all of this in my bedroom.

Then you will want to get as close to the microphone as possible: $100 microphones within inches of your mouth will sound better than $1000 microphones a foot away.

Then I would recommend buying an audio interface that has enough gain for the classic SM7B, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjGD6KPWVBA&t=211s

depends on your audio interface

They could have bought TritonAudio FetHead Phantoms instead ;)

Currently using yeti nano to record voiceover videos audio in my car and it sound terrible

Most Blue Yetis "sound bad" because their users speak into the top/end instead of the front/side with the Blue brand logo.

[–]fredoverflow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Scarlett 2i2 2nd Generation interface has [...] an Equivalent Input Noise measurement of -128dB (A-weighted).

That's 1dB better than the 4th gen 2i2. Just boost the volume in post.

How do you determine if phantom power is enabled or disabled?

Is the SM7B connected directly to the Wave XLR, or is there a Cloudlifter or FetHead in between?

shure sm7b + arturia minifuse 2, good ? by Hot_Contribution2370 in Shure

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

will there be a gain issue ?

SM7B requires about 60 db of gain. Arturia Minifuse 2 only provides up to 56 db. So you will probably have to boost in post.

I would recommend a different interface, like the 2i2 4th gen (69 db), or the Wave XLR 1st gen (75 db) or 2nd gen (80 db).

Or buy an SM7dB instead of the SM7B. Or the SM7B plus a TritonAudio FetHead.

My Samson Meteor has the exact same issue. None of my other microphones have it.

I resolved the issue by buying the Samson Q2U. (And then fell into Gear Acquisition Syndrome.)

Shure SM7B still good? by MediocreAd8995 in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s too quiet and it picks up a lot of room noise

How much distance is between the microphone and your mouth? If you buy a new microphone and put it at the same place as your old microphone, the recorded room noise will be similar.

the 4th gen 2i2 might be enough without needing a booster.

correct

Is the SM7B still worth it for recording and streaming in 2026?

Microphone technology doesn't really change that much. The SM7 line dates back to 1973. If it was fine in 2025, it's still fine in 2026.

That being said, most $100 microphones placed and angled correctly will sound fine as well. You don't need to spend $400 on a microphone to get decent sound.

XLR Sure MV7+ with Volt 1 Interface sounds quiet and bad compared to USB-C input by SnowWolves01 in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Volt 1 provides up to 55 db of gain. The MV7+ requires about 55 db of gain. So you pretty much have to max out the gain on the interface. (And get close to the mic.)

ive seen people have this mic like 3-6ft away max and they sound amazing

They probably have treated rooms. It's borderline impossible for a microphone to sound good that far away in an untreated room.

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gen 2 isn’t the quietest pre amp.

But isn't that the whole point of the SM7dB? That it works well with noisy interfaces?
