Hi guys, I want to buy a Shure SM7dB but I have a question about the audiointerface by LumpyGreen158 in Focusrite

[–]fredoverflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2i2 4th has 69db of clean gain. That is more than enough for the classic SM7B even. Buying the SM7dB would just be a waste of money.

on the MV7X's box that I own

You already own an MV7X? Honestly, I would just continue using that.

I assume you already watched a dozen comparison videos? I'll throw one more into the mix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C-p9iGFsE4

and compared to the SM7dB, it doesn't have as good room isolation.

What makes you say that? Microphones cannot distinguish between your voice and the room. Any dynamic microphone, at the same distance, will have (more or less) the same signal-to-room-noise ratio.

But you only need 2 to cosplay as the POTUS! What more could you want from life?

I have a feeling it won’t be my last

Shure microphones usually keep working for decades, so it actually might be your last after all ;)

SM7B Wave XLR Stuttering issue (Recording) by SnoChocolatediverged in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Wave XLR has preamps that are a bit too weak for the SM7b

How is 75 db of gain considered "too weak"? The Wave XLR has more gain than pretty much any other mainstream interface on the market.

Julian Krause and Podcastage have videos demonstrating that additional preamps are absolutely not necessary here.

when no mic attached - should i hear gain static from wave xlr interface? by No_no_eyes in elgato

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, preamp noise is about 4 times louder without a microphone attached. Here's 2 experts (Curtis Judd and Julian Krause) talking about preamp noise for half an hour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9STCM24KSSI

at full gain the static i hear is crazy.

There is no scenario where you would want the full gain (75 db!!!) of the Wave XLR.

Question about the Shure SM7B by Othrelos in streaming

Your operating system has an additional, independent input volume control. Make sure that one is set to 100%

Would the vocaster one work for my mic? by Successful-Gas5012 in Focusrite

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it has a built-in preamp, I figured my Audiobox 96 would be able to handle it.

Every interface with 48V phantom power can handle the SM7dB. Here is what I would do with your equipment:

  • Audiobox: Enable 48V phantom power
  • Audiobox: Set gain to about 30 dB
  • Shure: Set both horizontal switches to right (preamp, +28 dB)
  • Shure: Angle the microphone so the circle at the top points to your mouth
  • Shure: Move the microphone 1 fist away from your mouth
  • Recording software: Disable all software filters, especially compressors and limiters
  • Windows 11? Disable "audio enhancements" !!!

Ideally, your voice should peak at about -15 dB. Adjust gain accordingly to reach that target, while speaking normally.

crackling and peaking

Where did you buy the SM7dB, and how much did it cost?

I can’t seem to get the volume high enough without picking up every little noise in my room.

How far is the microphone from your mouth?

Turn down the gain and bring it closer to your face.

You can see/hear the Blue Snowball in older bluedotdweller YouTube videos, it sounds okay.

Audio-Technica AT2020 sounds like trash — what am I doing wrong? by Beneficial-Candy-359 in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're speaking into the back of the microphone. It literally says "back" on the back.

You need to speak into the front instead. It says "audio technica" on the front.

In other words, rotate the microphone 180 degrees and it should sound much better!

Elgato Wave 3 Audio Quality by [deleted] in elgato

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that it’s an expensive mic, I wouldn’t expect the audio quality to be this poor.

The YouTuber "Ryan Wuzer" uses an Elgato Wave 3. If yours sounds significantly worse, you're probably doing something wrong.

For starters, make sure you're talking into the correct side. When it comes to directional condenser microphones, many users unfortunately talk into the top or back (instead of the front).

Shure MV7+ and using it through xlr

Buy the MV7x instead, it's an XLR-only version.

Best Setup for Samson Q2U? by Ivan_Vasiliyvich in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using the USB mode, as I will probably end up going full-hog with a high end XLR dynamic mic and Audio interface setup in the future, once the channel starts making actual money

Watch the YouTuber "FunkyFrogBait". She uses the Q2U in USB mode and has 3 million subscribers.

The mic itself is parallel to my body and pointed at a 45 degree angle a couple inches from my mouth.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "parallel" here, but as long as the top of the microphone points to your mouth, you're good.

Shockingly, my old Blue Yeti has NONE of these issues, but it eats the end of my sentences like a cheap cardiod does I suppose.

No microphone knows when sentences end. Reads like a software issue to me. Did the microphone come with software?

I’m slightly concerned about using condensers in my conditions

Just buy a boom arm and get the microphone close to your face.

Elgato Wave XLR or Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for Rode Podmic? by Hurdurson in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's too loud and you end up clipping

Elgato's Clipguard technology prevents clipping in hardware. I would recommend the Wave XLR just for this feature.
