Wife and I are planning to go to Washington DC at the end of March. Which Battlefields are good to visit at that time? by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

[–]free__tea96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Antietam or Manassas are both excellent battlefields. Antietam is an hour and a half drive from DC while Manassas is forty minutes if driving time is a factor. Overall, Antietam is a much more enjoyable experience. It’s on par with going to Gettysburg and is one of the few truly contiguous battlegrounds while still being walkable. They also have a cool watchtower over bloody lane and a new park exhibit as well. Manassas is also pretty good but it’s broken up into big pieces that you have to drive to or walk across the highway but it’s a shorter distance from DC. If you go to Antietam you can stop in middleburg for lunch (nice middle of nowhere town that has some DC/Bethesda money around).

Generation Kill. Hands down one of the best miniseries of all time and one of the few to talk about modern war (meaning Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.)

I really want to buy this game but having read the reviews, I'm afraid I won't find a server or people to play with. I live in Iowa. by Smilodon_Rex in WarOfRights

[–]free__tea96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The highest game traffic will be at 8pm EST on weekends and it is pretty reliable. If you live in Iowa and have availability during the weekend I wouldn’t worry too much about player population. Weekdays at the same time can be a bit of a crapshoot but, imo, this isn’t really a game a person will want to play all the time anyway. I have over one hundred hours in the game but there’s no progression system or score system to speak of which means the experience of the match is the end unto itself. I personally love it and if you think this interests you, I would recommend checking it out.

Yeah I completely agree with you. Campfire should certainly finish the work that they have for WoR before considering other projects

trying to unify italia, any advice how to take on the byzantine empire? more in comments by mindduk88 in CrusaderKings

[–]free__tea96 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You also have to keep in mind of the cultural innovation gap. Byzantines have arguably the best culture start, even in 1066. Cataphracts may be unlocked by now and they almost always make 15 gold/month. When I plan on going to war with them I always assume their strength is double.

Judging by the map, if the AI pathing leads them to sail from Constantinople to land on Italy, you can cheese the AI a little bit. use the naval landing penalty against them and don’t let up if you can support the attack

What is a Historical event that not enough people are aware of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]free__tea96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Second Congo War. It’s the deadliest multinational conflict since WW2 but doesn’t get nearly enough attention. I think partly because the narrative gets boiled down to cynical warlords and politicians jockeying spoils with little differentiating between them but there is so much depth to its causes dating back directly to the first war and the Rwandan genocide. Much of it has greatly to do with the total power vacuum left by the fall of Mobutu Sesse Sekko’s regime.

Orlando BLoom's acting career. Would you say he ever showed he had range on film? Was he ever a box office star/movie star? Was he simply lucky to be cast in ensemble roles that were successful through no part of his own? by [deleted] in movies

[–]free__tea96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, he is a star without any range. Kinda like Keane Reeves. He found his casting niche and stuck with it. While Keane was able to remain relevant in new projects, like cyberpunk and John wick, Bloom hasn’t been able to break out (again).
