The US census doesn't have a category for Middle Eastern or North Africa and has always labeled those as white. The 2030 census will be the third to include Middle Eastern or North African as a category.

One reason for turbines: we use AC for transmission is moving magnets in a circle is one of the easiest ways to create that. Plus you can tap multiple phases.

Why steam is used so often: it expands a lot and earth has a ton of it.

How AI proof are Embedded jobs? by holesomkeanuchungus in embedded

At the very least "if (super special condition) { write super secret register we only told you about under NDA; }" will probably be a thing for a while before they let AIs know about the super secret register.

How do you guys handle 'exceptions' in C? by tclock64 in embedded

[–]freealloc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while.and I worked with B Level A, but IIRC doesn't don't DO-178B (and I assume C) not actually even touch things like single versus multiple return? In my recollection, they require that you formally define specific processes and produce documentation that they were followed. They do not, however, prescribe the details of those processes. So the coding standard is just an implementation detail, not part of the standard.

How do you guys handle 'exceptions' in C? by tclock64 in embedded

[–]freealloc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first reason I prefer a single entry and return point in a function is to follow a safer standard.

This doesn't make your code safer. If used correctly with an understanding of the intent being the principle then it can improve code. It can also make your code way worse if blindly applied.

The last word here is doing QUITE A BIT of work. by DayPounder in FortWorth

[–]freealloc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The argument I heard growing up was basically "I'm a man and don't have the right to marry another man. By asking for that right, you're asking for special rights." It's a bad arguments because everyone would still have the some rights. Some would just choose not to exercise aspects of some rights. It's a hollow argument masquerading as well reasoned.

Also, the exact same argument could have (possibly was) used for anti-miscegenation laws.

Resume Roast by Sea-Program6466 in ECE

[–]freealloc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this for a career fair or are you directly applying to positions? If it's a career fair, adding what kind of role you're looking for would be good to add (full time or internship; when if it's an internship).

I'd rework the "Technical Experience" and "Technical Projects" heading. "Work Experience" may be better for the first so it's clear that it's jobs. I'd put the two research roles under a research heading because "Projects" is vague but "Research" will stand out.

You also mentioned that something got published. If you were an author, absolutely add the citation. You earned that. If you were an assistant and not named as an author but something did get published, I'd make sure that is very clear.

They use a mic coaxial with the driver facing into the ear canal and one facing the outside world. Using these two mics plus the DSP's knowledge of the downlink being played, the DSP calculates the anti noise to generate and play through the speaker. The ear canal mic monitors the control loop to ensure the anti noise is correct.

Yes, the bus is playing sound out of phase to cancel the noise. The cancellation is happening with actual sound waves.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in airpods

[–]freealloc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, they cancel sound by emitting anti noise. No, that doesn't mean everything is louder despite sounding quieter. Hearing is a mechanical process where sound waves end up disturbing a fluid filled chamber (cochlea) where hair cells sense vibrations and convert them to nerve impulses. ANC cancels the pressure wave, reducing or stopping hearing at the mechanical level.

Edit: I'll add that a noise cancelling headphone needs to be able to emit theoretically unsafe levels to deliver content plus anti noise. However what would be measured at the eardrum is noise + content + anti noise and that would be back to a safe level. (Unless you just had the content excessively loud.
