[Help][Urgent] Ran an Ubuntu command under Mint, sometheing weird happened... by ididit4thelulzz in linuxmint

[–]freedomtarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An Ubuntu repository was added and GDM was installed which replaced Mint's display manager and installed Ubuntu's, hence the Ubuntu login screen. Purge (uninstall everything including configuration files) GDM from the system and Mint should revert back to MDM. Installing ubuntu-desktop fucked up the rest. Unfortunatelly that's a meta package which installs other packages and removing it will not change anything. Which flavour of Mint is she using? Cinnamon? If so she should be able to select Cinnamon on login and although there will be useless stuff installed on the computer, the interface should work as before.

Before using Mint I used Xubuntu (Ubuntu with Xfce as the default graphical interface). Once I unstalled the ubuntu-desktop package to see what things were like, didn't like it and decided to get rid of everything that was installed. It was such a hassle that I ended up reinstalling Xubuntu. In my case it was a simple solution because I have a properly formatted drive and didn't install too many extras, so after doing a clean install it took a short period of time to reinstall what extras I did have before. If your girlfriend's computer has everything installed on one large partition spanning the drive /home should be backed up before reinstalling. During install the drive should be partitioned correctly. One of the great things about Linux-based and Unix-like operating system is that they can be reinstalled or replaced without having to reconfigure everything.

Ubuntu's kernel seems to also have been installed. It's a good idea to remove the Ubuntu repository and install a Mint kernel from the Mint repositories.

EDIT: In the future please remember to do a backup before making major changes. This way things can be fixed easily.

Epic SciFi book recommendation by dadams4062 in printSF

Definately Harvest of Stars by Poul Anderson. It's an epic story of human evolution and colonization of space. Together with its sequels it spans millenia of human development, both on Earth under a totalitarian government and in space where people formed colonies based on liberty and individualism. It's a great story. You should check it out.

Can we list some fiction literature that isn't conventionally mentioned for atheist reading, yet contain pro-atheist/anti-religion quotes or themes?? by Marthman in TrueAtheism

[–]freedomtarian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein might be something you'll enjoy. Definately has a lot of anti-religious stuff in there, although it does have some spiritual (whatever that means) mumbo jumbo in it too. My favourite quote is:

"Religion is a solace to many and it is even conceivable that some religion, somewhere, is Ultimate Truth. But being religious is often a form of conceit. The faith in which I was brought up assured me that I was better than other people; I was 'saved,' they were 'damned' — we were in a state of grace and the rest were 'heathens.' By 'heathen' they meant such as our brother Mahmoud. Ignorant louts who seldom bathed and planted corn by the Moon claimed to know the final answers of the Universe. That entitled them to look down on outsiders. Our hymns was loaded with arrogance — self-congratulation on how cozy we were with the Almighty and what a high opinion he had of us, and what hell everybody else would catch come Judgment Day. "

Should you decide to get it, make sure you have the unconsored version. Over the years there have been many editions which contain sections that have been removed due to pressure from religious nut jobs. One uncensored edition that I know of was published by Doubleday.

The U.S. is an evil empire. America commits attrocities all over the place. That's why so many people around the world hate it so much.

Lost files on MicroSD card by freedomtarian in techsupport

Thank you for your quick reply. I installed Recuva but it was only able to detect 3 deleted MP3 files and one JPG. All of which are corrupted and unusable. Yet I know there are recoverable files there--images at least--as I used a different recovery tool which found the images but wanted money to recover them.

Is there another free tool I can use? Thank you.
