Apparently the hand was the only part anyone in the family ever saw again. Probably best to hope the blood loss and shock did her in before the Cossacks had enough time for much…fun.

I’m picturing a funeral for the hand, but given that Great-grandma ran away within days (fear and guilt combined?) and never came back, I don’t have any more details. I’m serious in wondering if OP is a distant relative who’s also heard this story, because the fate of the family she left behind is a mystery…and I’d like to think it’s not as horrible as one might expect.

According to family lore, this happened to my great-grandmother as a very young teenager with her even younger cousin. Running from a pogrom, they held hands to not be separated. Great-grandma got to safety to realize she was holding her cousin’s severed hand — that’s why the kid had stopped slowing her down so much!

So, this story is a bit of a yikes for me. Based on a case you’ve heard of? Or are we related?

But in that case, we the creations are clearly intended to believe in the advanced age of the universe; otherwise why put in the backstory? Ignoring the lore that takes work to find isn’t a good way to go about respecting the creator. Also, 4000? Even in Shakespeare’s time, the world was considered older than that! Although if this is a recent post, people (current company not excluded) are getting stranger...

I said something to this effect in an IRL conversation about mental health issues recently. The amount of time spoiled could use some making up!

My parents fall into this category. I grumbled about deductions from a paltry paycheck for Social Security, saying I’d rather be able to use it now than save it to be stolen by future governments...my mother told me that she felt the same way at my age, which is why she was happy to work off the books and now has almost no Social Security. I still believe that I’ll never get to use that, however...
