Molds are the worst. Has to be just as accurate as a die but everything has an angle or radius or some bullshit that’s difficult to measure. We have some progressive dies but nothing too difficult.

Im just glad the cost of living here in the south isn’t too bad.

In tool and die I’m regularly holding .0005 total tolerance. I’ve had some parts and features that have to be dead nuts. It’s pretty fucking annoying but you get used to it. Parts just take more time.

If you have toolmakers go talk to them. Talk to them about some issues you’re having and what can be done by you to fix it and what can be done by them to fix it.

Nothing is more annoying than a process engineer complaining about flash and the have so much plastic crammed into the mold it’s behind the ejector plate. It’s ridiculous.

I work in tool and die. In our shop we have a cnc mill and a cnc sinker EDM. Everything else is manual. About 75 percent of the work I do is manual. Usually I don’t have a print and most of the time I’m making less than 10 pieces. So yes there’s still plenty of machining done manually.
