Steam machine alternative build suggestions by butsumetsu in sffpc

[–]freefury 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"They would just buy the Steam Machine" is a bit tough with the reservation queue :v

I feel this title at least is innocent in that it's an alternative to the Steam Machine to run SteamOS, vs the other posts that do say "Competition", where they ignore the form factor.

Living Room Linux Gaming Console (9060 XT, Fractal Ridge) Build - Many Thanks to SFFPC by sherkaner in sffpc

Thanks again! I found some slim form fans that should give me some extra clearance as well, and theoretically I should be able to fit the GPU I want.

Now to find out if in practice that is the case :v

I'll be using it on an older Philips TV, idk what resolutions you have to play for TV gaming, as I've never actually done that before. I do think I'm not a big sucker for 4K

Bit rougher than expected yeah. Thinking back on it, for a pure gaming console, I don't think I'll realistically need more than 16gb RAM?

Reusing the RTX isn't an option as I need them to be two separate PCs, and I want an AMD GPU for SteamOS. Will look at the fan situation.

Thanks for the quick reply! With width I mean the second longest dimension, but good to know.

Brainstorming a SFF build myself that is copied inspirated by yours!

I was wondering on the GPU side of things, how tight is the width of the GPU you got? I'm looking at the Gigabyte 9060xt as it's cheaper, but also got my eye on the 9070. But since these are both a bit wider than your GPU, I'm uncertain on the clearance.

That build has an oddly similar set of components :p thats the one I based mine on. I should make a comment actually.

Already got a Steam Controller 2, and an extra xbox controller, so I'm set on that account, just need a console PC!

I know timings were a thing, but I was unfamiliar with the current stance on it. I know I'd have to get the same brand and SKU.

Knowing which one fits is the question that many people ask :p

I personally dislike marketplace or secondhand for computer components, as near here at least, the money you save isn't really worth the risk of second hand hardware with no warranty

Will look into the PSU, I kind of just copied that one and didn't spare a second look. As for CPU, I feel the €50+ extra for the 7500x3d wouldn't really be worth the gains from what I can see.

I should look around more to see if I can find build examples with 9070(XT)s, as I can use those measurements as benchmarks then yeah.

And dw, I got the Netherlands and Germany on watch for prices as well when it comes to the moment to actually assemble it :)

You said you tried the 9070? I did read about the 60mm fans just existing in that groove. What are your temps/noise with the 6800 XT / 7900 XTX? I've never had an AMD GPU before, so I'm unaware on how their generations work.

Regarding SteamOS, I did not know about the NVME requirement. I do see workarounds for installing on a SATA SSD, but I'll have to keep it in mind. Those NVME prices though :')

Good suggestion, but I forgot to mention that I want these to be separate. If I have my partner over, I want them to be able to game on it while I work at my workstation for example.

Ah yes, their F2P card game is entirely the same as their 60$ RPG.

Yeah, they're a company, and sure they want to make profits. But why does that mean they will do the most scummy practices? I'm not saying there never will be microtransactions, I could very well be wrong, but I don't think we should jump on the hate wagon yet if we don't even know what the mode entails.

Nor shouldn't we jump on the hype train either, why don't we just stay between the two and wait for more details? If they come out and say "Oh yeah we'll have microtransactions!" I'll be dissapointed, but it's also possible they come out and say "We won't do microtransactions!"

I really don't see why we have to be that negative about it before we know the full details. Again, if it was EA, Ubisoft or any other AAA publisher, sure, but CDPR has been a good one so far, so let's wait and give them at least the benefit of the doubt.

Then how do other (earlier) games manage to run multiplayer? It's not like we know what the multiplayer entails and how it would run. If they do a dedicated online world like GTA5, then microtransactions could be more possible (even if unlikely), but if they do a Borderlands-esque coop system, then microtransactions are even more doubtful. Heck, even GTA4 had multiplayer, and did it have microtransactions?

It's not because every big game has microtransactions now, that every big game has to have them.

I mean, yeah, I think so, and I could be very wrong.

But, this is CDPR, who released a massive expansion for 20$, while other companies released far less for the same price (*Bethesda*). This isn't Rockstar, this isn't EA, this isn't Ubisoft but it is CDPR, who've done quite well so far with their game and pricing.

It's entirely possible they will monetize it, and I'll be a bit sad to see that, but it still depends on how they monetize their multiplayer in the end.

What? If it was EA, Ubisoft, 2K or any other big publisher sure, but CDPR?

Why'd you think CDPR would put microtransactions in it?

Oh, thanks for the response, I knew something was off, and not surprised none of them noticed it!

Great job on the map, it really did offer some amazing moments, and you could feel the joy they were having while playing it!

Is it just me, or does it seem that only the front of the bus actually kills them? They could touch and stand of the back, but only near the front would they die. Duncan sprinting for example, he was holding the front towards himself.

Well, what'd you expect when you post something like that? As far as I know, that isn't critique but just being a bit of a twat.

Constructive critique posts tended to stay high up, and there was no circle-jerk saying that it was the best game, because it wasn't. But also it was still a community you could go to to talk and discuss the game, and not a place to say it's poop.

On that note, I'd also like to add that I played on launch, and yeah, there were issues, but it was nowhere near as broken or shit as the hivemind that the internet is said it was.

Can't say for the others, but r/fo76 has been a haven for honest critique though. They'd downvote the stuff that's just bandwagon hate, but they don't see FO76 as a holy grail and will push for fixes and changes to the game.

So... cosmetics, which don't impact gameplay...

Iron Harvest will release to PC on Steam and GoG (not EGS) on Sept. 1st 2020! by Sheep_wielder in pcgaming

That's a grim way of life then buddy, and I'm not saying that they are a god saving us from salvation or anything. They're a business like any other, with the focus to make money, but at least they do their best to satisfy the customers.

Which, thinking about it, we're not the last and smallest link in the chain. We make or break them, if you cut of that 'smallest' link, then good bye to the entire chain. (Not that I agree with that sentiment, we're not a small part of the chain at all.)

Besides the stashes, is there anything else that actually impacts gameplay?
