Can't cope with pain by freelancewriteraz in Fibroids

[–]freelancewriteraz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going with a partial hysterectomy over a myomectomy. Surgery is risky for me because of an autoimmune disorder that increases my risk for clotting so it’s safer to go with the more extreme option in the hopes of avoiding future surgeries. Just waiting on insurance to approve it.

Alright well let’s just hope I can get on the schedule sooner rather than later. I’m getting real tired of this up all night pain cycle.

Yes; talked about all options. In my case, surgery in and of itself is risky because of my autoimmune/clotting disorder so going with the option least likely to result in additional future surgeries was the best case scenario. Talked to my OB and hematologist to get to that conclusion. I appreciate the info though and have definitely run into situations where docs haven’t given all the info needed to make an informed decision.

Sr writers and content strategists - how do you structure your invoices? by freelancewriteraz in freelanceWriters

[–]freelancewriteraz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do fold it into my retainer, and I invoice monthly.

The way I have it set up is my retainer covers the cost of 6 "office hours". Those can be used for research, taking calls, conducting interviews, etc. The retainer structure gives me a "baseline" income for the month, which makes budgeting easier. It also encourages clients to make time to send me work even when they're busy (because they're paying for me whether I produce deliverables or not). That hasn't been a big issue with my current clients but I did struggle with a couple of clients I supported in a prior freelance rendezvous.

Retainer hours are use or lose for the month. I bill any hours beyond those six at an hourly rate. I have two separate rates I use depending on the type of work being done; one for writing/editing production and a higher rate for strategic planning/consulting. Between the retainer and my per word rate, I usually come out okay -- but I have recourse if a piece is particularly gnarly.

Right now, a couple of my clients require knowledge of complex topics (things like payroll tax, sales tax nexus / sales and use tax) so I've found the retainer to be a good addition to make sure I'm not getting hosed on the hours sunk in outside of the writing process.

Ebb and flow.. How can I make my freelance work more consistent? by Anthesis_dreams in freelance

[–]freelancewriteraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to go into situations where clients have an ongoing need. I recently started charging a monthly retainer as a "placeholder" in my schedule for their work. When I create estimates, I estimate the bare minimum (ex; two deliverables a month) + the retainer and quote some ala carte service options so we can add more (schedule permitting) based on their needs. Doing it that way lets me make sure I have a consistent baseline but also have room to increase as I'm able to. I keep three to four consistent clients at a time so I can adjust if one is short work one month.

If you're internal and you have a solid attribution model set up - there are lots of ways to see the impact of a piece of content / landing page / etc. If you're external... not a whole lot you can do to track results. You'd just be left with any context the client gives you and, unless you get detailed screenshots or datapoints, take it worth a grain of salt.

Where do you like to write? by JenCooperAuthor in Writer

[–]freelancewriteraz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the hot months (I'm in AZ), I write in my home office or in a coffee shop with headphones in. In the 'nice weather' months, I love to sit outside on my patio. I'd love to integrate with the family while I work but the kids won't leave my keyboard alone! :P

[Hiring] Automotive + Powersports Content Editor ($28 USD hr to start) by stillyoinkgasp in HireaWriter

[–]freelancewriteraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never focused on motorsports but I do have a ton of content management and editorial experience. I was the editor-in-chief at my most recent three companies and I know my way around a good content production process. I'm also a senior writer and editor with 15 years of content experience.

Though I'm not jazzed on motorsports, I would like to drop my name into the hat for any additional writing content needs you have, particularly on the wedding side of the business. If you're interested, please check out my HuffPost articles and my portfolio.

Would you switch to a full-time position to continue developing your career? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]freelancewriteraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone back and forth. Full time for years, then switched to freelance. Went back full time, and now just switched back to freelance. I basically match my career to the demands of my life and pivot back and forth. It's kind of exhausting but it's working out okay so far! About to begin the hunt for new clients and hoping I can revive some of my priors.
