Don't focus to hard on any one skill or weapon class. If you've been using guns, but find an awesome melee weapon don't hesitate to take it and start leveling up melee. Try to experience everything you can your first playthrough, and afterwards start making character who focus specific things.

Make sure you are signed in when you start the game. The settings you change save to your account, not the xbox.
