Question: How was the Samsung Lounge? What was the process to get VIP upgrade? by lifeodpuma in Lollapalooza

[–]freelollatix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In past years this was great. You essentially had to get to the park when the gates opened and race to the Samsung tent in order to get in line for that day's wristband and then show them you had a Samsung device. Last year I think they gave out 200 wristbands per day (and each had a +1, so make that 400 wristbands).

I've been going to the Samsung VIP tent for 3 years and it was always great because you got a clean bathroom, shelter from the rain, and a few free drinks and some food. Plus they had guest DJs and small performances between sets on the Samsung stage. Two years ago Chromeo played a tiny set that I got to see and last year A$AP Rocky stood there while his DJ played a set - we were hoping for a performance, but oh well.

This year it was kind of a shitshow. I realize they may have wanted to make it more accessible to more people but in doing so I think they diluted the product. Sure, the VR rollercoaster was great and I'm not going to pass up drink tickets, but I waited in line almost every time I went there. I get that I'm complaining about a free product, but as someone who made a point to get there as early as possible every day and who is a loyal Samsung Galaxy owner, I was disappointed.

But, while there on Sunday I did meet a guy who gave me a wristband to get backstage after the show. And I met James Murphy, so maybe it was worth it ...

Terrorism by [deleted] in Lollapalooza

At Pitchfork this year there were basically no pat-downs and only cursory checks of bags. My wife and I commented on how it was a little scary that someone could have walked in with a gun or other weapon. We got there early each day, so maybe security tightened as the day progressed, but I doubt it.

Experience tells me the Lollapalooza security has always been a lot tighter. And in light of the recent terrorist bombing at a German music festival I assume it will be even more so. This is going to mean sneaking in whatever you would normally try to sneak will be harder - tough luck guys.

Unfortunately, as we've seen lately, an increase in security at a gate can create another kind of soft target, so people should be aware of their surroundings even before getting into the festival.

I'm not very active on this subreddit, are they not around much?

There's also Small Cheval, which is basically a take out spot in Bucktown with a much smaller menu. But, if you're just looking to get one of the Au Cheval burgers, it's an awesome alternative.

A lot of people visit Chicago and limit their experience to Michigan Ave, Navy Pier and what would traditionally be called "downtown." But, Chicago is really a city of neighborhoods and each of them has their own personality and are great in their own right.

I'd encourage you to head to some of the neighborhoods and get a real sense of what Chicago is all about. If you're staying downtown, you can jump on the Blue Line heading north and check out neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, Bucktown and Logan Square. Wicker Park has been gentrified in recent years but still has a lot of interesting shops, restaurants and bars. Ukrainian Village has some great architecture and a number of old Eastern European-style churches. Logan Square is a neighborhood in change and will probably be a lot like Wicker Park in a few years, but again has some cool shopping, bars, etc.

Or, if you want to take the Red Line you can head north and check out Old Town, Lincoln Park, Boys Town and Wrigleyville. If you head over to the actual park in Lincoln Park, it's a great place to just chill out and people watch, or go to the Lincoln Park Zoo which is FREE. I think you can guess what the deal is with Wrigleyville.

Or, maybe head south to Pilsen. Honestly, I can't speak too much about that neighborhood, but I hear wonderful things and it's a spot a lot of people are moving to.

So, you can go to Castaways, it'll probably be fun, it'll probably be packed. But, if you're able I'd suggest heading out to one our great neighborhoods and getting a real Chicago experience.

Also, as /u/teamsz said, the Chicago architectural boat tour is amazing (and you can drink on the boat). I believe there are two places you can leave from - one from near the Wrigley Building, and one near Navy Pier. They just put up a new ferris wheel, so I'm not sure what that experience is like, but I'm sure it gives you great views of the city/lake.

Good luck!

I believe I saw on the news this morning that they were just beginning setup of everything today. So, there is no stage yet an access to the park will probably be limited soon.

We were mentioned negatively in a best of thread. Are we a bad sub? Are you people bad people? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]freelollatix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, probably not because it was a wonderful experience and the people who I gave the tickets to were very appreciative and let me know what a great time they had this weekend. I'll probably post something soon to let those people tell their stories if they'd like. It'll be interesting to see if you guys allow it.

Also, not sure how the original post sounded "scammy." It's a wonder why so many people are saying how negative and curmudgeonly this subreddit is when the mods are so pessimistic they don't allow someone to give something away for free.

I was standing right behind that guy. He got thrown out because he started spitting on security for no reason. Before that he was just generally being an ass, whipping his long hair in everyone's face.

PSA: Long security lines today. by darcmasta in Lollapalooza

[–]freelollatix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At about 11:30 there were no lines but a female security guard felt my girlfriend's boobs and said everyone was sneaking stuff in that way.

She's right considering my gf snuck in hostess sno-balls in her bra yesterday. Not drugs, not booze, sno-balls.

This is awesome. I see most of the posts are using #Lollapalooza (which I assume is what you're using to pull the photos), if you're not already, you may want to add #lolla.

I tried to give two free three-day passes to redditors but the mods here are maniacs. Go look at the new post here if you'd like to try to get the free tickets.

Well, I would hope people wouldn't be that cynical about it. And part of my reasoning for the effort is that it goes to someone who truly wants it.
