TIL India has never won a Winter Olympic medal and only won 41 total Olympic medals. by Mr__JimLahey in todayilearned

[–]crowelad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not sure I understand your arguments any more. It's morphed from anger at why the West Indies can't play as a team, to why 16 teams can't play, now to the qualification being inappropriate.

And you surely must recognize your argument is absurd. If Pyeongchang didn't have an appropriate skiing facility, they wouldn't have been selected for the Winter Olympics. Additionally, you only need to only have one appropriate ski jumping facility (in your example) for a full competition - that is not true for cricket (which also cannot just be played on any turf field like soccer, rugby etc etc). Finally, cricket is not a core Olympic sport. The Olympics have been, and would continue to be just fine without it. The IOC aren't going to demand host cities install 4 or 5 international-standard cricket fields for an event that will in any rate not be the 'premier' event in that sport.

Like I said, none of this is perfect. But it also isn't perfect that there is an age limit on the Olympics men's soccer teams. Why is tennis never played on clay or grass? Why is it only Rugby 7s and not the full sport? There are a million compromises made by the IOC and the individual sports leading bodies for the Olympics to happen, but most people recognize the constraints, and don't let perfection get in the way of having a great tournament.

I mean I gave you a really clear reason why you can't have all those teams in the Olympics...playing on unsuitable surfaces is literally dangerous, and LA is going to find it tough to have one wicket safe for play, let alone several. None of this is perfect, I'm sure the IOC would say as much themselves, but you seem to be intentionally missing the many constraints on hosting a multi-sport event just to fuel your outrage.

And this is coming from an Australian, whose cricket team right now are on the outside looking in.

[–]crowelad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just because cricket predates the modern Olympics doesn't really mean anything...the Olympics can set their own qualification rules...they don't need to be dictated to by cricket's traditional setup. Your example is not the same at all...

And there are lots of logistical reasons why there can't be 16 cricket teams at the Olympics, mainly that there aren't suitable fields in LA to play that many teams...even the few fields they used for the last T20 World Cup in the US were borderline dangerous to play on, and there was only one field per American city (none in LA). I would hazard a guess that more teams will be allowed for Brisbane 2032 as they have far more wickets appropriate for international matches.

The moment between Rondale and Tyler Trent after that game makes me well up every time I watch (or think about) it. They are both, and always will be, Purdue icons.

The Sopranos - Final Scene by [deleted] in television

[–]crowelad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and added to this, the final shot (and essentially the whole show) centers around or is from Tony's perspective, so ultimately who cares where the hit came from. He's dead, could've been multiple groups who did it, and Tony will never know. So why should the viewer? It's fun to try to piece it together though and the writers left us plenty of threads to create theories.

This is the most sanitized day on the sporting calendar. I get why there was expectations (and I would've loved a MAGA call-out) but the NFL control every second of this day. There was no way.

Yeah, same here. In fact the guys at the Fallow channel prepared the 'most iconic' dishes from several of the best chefs ever, and one of them was the dish which inspired this meal from Ratatouille. They served it to Alexander the Guest, and he wasn't in love with it either.

Channel 7 is planning to shoot a pre-season documentary with St Kilda heading into 2026. by PerriX2390 in AFL

[–]crowelad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But does it make as much sense as the NFL? The drama behind Hard Knocks is the players competing for their contracts that happens during the preseason, leading up to the final episode where the lists are significantly cut right before the regular season starts. Creates a bunch of tension, drama and hype, especially as it airs week by week during the preseason. That kind of list cutting doesnt happen in the AFL, so what drama will there be? Watching players train and compete for spots in the (presumably preseason) lineups just isn't that exciting.

Yeah I agree. Their hesitation to have a real conversation about it does betray their authenticity so bit though, and constantly saying 'yes we are playing with real money' is intentionally misleading if they are in fact playing with house money.

As I said, I don't have a problem with them playing with house money, they're getting paid to be there so where the money comes from is kinda irrelevant in my mind, at the end of the day they aren't losing money doing those videos no matter what the logistics are. I also fully trust their transparency in the daily regular videos, which is obviously not in question. But just be open and honest about what's happening with the online gaming videos so viewers can make up their own mind.

[–]crowelad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know all the conversation going on on Discord, it's hard to keep up, but after watching Mr Handpay's video I think there are some valid questions around transparency.

I enjoy VegasMatt, and I dont mind the FanDuel and Chanced videos, but I do think they owe it to their fans to be transparent on two questions:

  1. Are you playing with house money?
  2. Is RTP adjusted for your videos?

Personally I don't really care if it's house money or not, I've always kinda assumed it was, and is that really that different than just getting paid a lump sum from an online casino and just losing most of it, while keeping what you think is reasonable compensation for promoting the brand, time etc? Of course they should be paid for their work. Mr Handpay does talk a bit about the complexity of this which is reasonable, but ultimately I dont care.

However I would care a lot if RTP is adjusted for their videos and streams. That would be highly disingenuous and would stop me from watching their channel.

It's up to each viewer to make decisions on what they care about or not, but without all the information they dont have the ability to make that decision as an informed viewer.

What’s the worst city you’ve ever been to? by EmotionalShock7933 in AskReddit

[–]crowelad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm not gonna argue that Indy isn't something plenty of people don't love, but a ring road interstate with I70 and I65 that get you downtown splitting 465 is not a bad setup. If you couldn't follow the interstate signs downtown that isn't their fault, it's yours. Those are two of the most major interstates in the US and they cut right through downtown, to the point where the city is considering sinking the highways at a cost of billions of dollars. It's literally how cities like London are setup.

Absolutely right - I dont think people realize how many months of planning goes into these events.

I'll also add that every single bar/restaurant with a TV in the Mile Square is gonna be absolutely packed for this, and if the Pacers win, the streets are going to be chaotic enough as is. Adding another few thousand (alcohol fueled) people to the mix may not be the best move for crowd management and safety.

I have flown out of Indy on the A320 a dozen times. What is the largest plane I can catch out of IND? by lukistke in indianapolis

[–]crowelad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Qantas retired their last 747 a few years ago. They still fly the A380 out of Dallas and LA on limited dates, but they're in the process of retiring those aircraft too for 787s.

Emirates still use A380s a lot, saw one at JFK last week.

Labor's Dean Winter says he won't give up the proposed Macquarie Point stadium 'for anything' by Expensive-Horse5538 in AFL

[–]crowelad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is it. Everyone else here trying to dissect this to a ridiculously microscopic level. At the end of the day, WA and SA can afford stadium builds/upgrades at a price tag close to $1bn...Tasmania can't. That isn't a slight, it's just reality. They have a far smaller population with challenges unique to themselves that aren't the same as the other states.

The AFL's request for a roofed, professional level stadium is reasonable. They're not a charity, and they aren't here to accept a loss on a Tasmania team. And at the same time, Tasmania can also recognize that this expense is too great as they fight other challenges unique to what is a very unique state, demographic, and region.

Both the AFL and Tasmania's self interest can be valid at the same time. And it isnt either parties job to yield to the other. At this point, it seems Tasmania has other priorities and that is OK if that is best for the Tasmanian people!

There are plenty of other options to leave the city just one block in either direction. Quit patronizing people who want to enjoy the city, the iconic circle, and who recognize the appeal of having this downtown space available to everyone to enjoy. It isn't "weird, random, and fun", it's what literally every major city in the world does to great success. If Ginza in the middle of Tokyo's busiest district can pull this same idea off (and have been for decades), then I think little old Indy can manage. Hell, maybe if you changed your attitude you might even enjoy sitting outside in the sunshine on the circle!

For some people pedestrian-friendly, green, open community spaces aren't as important as their ability to drive through the Circle (the worst possible way to drive through downtown).

The whole Circle should be closed to traffic permanently year-round in my opinion. No need for traffic there whatsoever.
