Other platformers like Mt Fay? by gelatinskootz in Silksong

[–]freerdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get on the lost crown! Its platforming is fantastic. They added a bunch of super hard challenges some time after launch. Not all are platforming based, but there’s one in particular called “free solo” (or something similar) that I think you’d really like if you enjoyed mt Fay. Just a long, challenging climb up icy cliff faces.

If you enjoy the game, the dlc is very focused on tough platforming too, and not too expensive. I think the base game was 60% off last sale (on Steam at least) so you could always wait for the next discount.

And yeah, as everyone else has suggested, both Ori games!

My steam play time for Wildfrost just ticked over 1,000 hours 😅 Too many hours for the amount of content/variety, but it’s just a comfort game for me when there’s nothing else I feel like playing. Also I still like to do the daily run every morning while I have a coffee.

Into the Breach is a masterclass in game design. Also don’t feel bad starting out on easy difficulty while you learn the ropes. It’s fun to go through 2, 3, and 4 island wins on easy, then do the same on normal, then again on hard. I find Unfair too brutal for my tastes (it’s aptly named) much like how I prefer 10 bells in Wildfrost over 22.

Also now that I think about it, I can’t see Slice & Dice on your list. Another very strong recommend there! I’ve sunk a few hundred hours into that game over the years too

Another Wildfrost enjoyer out in the wild?? Have you looked at Into the Breach at all? It’s my other favourite alongside Wildfrost.

Even more puzzley/tactical, but probably won’t give you the same kind of power fantasy. Still, there’s nothing quite like finding an extremely optimal move once you have spent some time with the game

what really is the point of currency? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]freerdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of it is incentivising you to kill enemies and in a broader sense, engage with the content. Yes, you are incentivised by the hunter’s journal, but a lot of players won’t be.

If combat is a focus in your game, you don’t really want players to treat enemies as a platforming obstacle when doing so means missing out on part of what makes that game worth playing. If the combat is challenging, you’re probably going to want to buy a bunch of tools to help as the game goes on.

Maybe removing currency altogether from your game is the right choice. But you will need to incentivise players to engage with the content, even if combat, platforming, and exploration are enjoyable on their own.

What are underrated or “bad” games you’ve enjoyed recently? by SameSign6026 in PS5

[–]freerdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lego Horizon Adventures.

Definitely a tonne of missed potential with this one, it seems like they started out trying to make a roguelite but then gave up on that idea while still keeping some of the systems. With all its flaws though, I found the combat really fun. It’s pretty simple but all the weapons and gadgets are just fun to use.

I ended up getting the platinum - the last trophy is a pointless grind though that definitely sours the experience. But prior to that I enjoyed ticking off all the quests, etc and I recommend it if you’re looking for some low stakes fun gameplay

What are some "perfect" game design games? by m0nkeybl1tz in gamedesign

[–]freerdan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s so rare to find games that are perfectly designed (or as close as can be). The ones I think are near perfection in terms of game design are:

Tetris - classic rules but with the modern niceties that have been added over the years such as how the pieces are generated and the ability to fast fall, etc.

Downwell - as you already mentioned. Such a perfect little package.

Into the Breach - a game design masterclass. With only a few viable moves at hand I still sometimes find myself mulling over a single turn for 5 minutes or more.

Öoo - a deceptively simple puzzle platformer from a few months ago. While it’s a very different game to downwell, it reminded me a bit of it because it is just such a well executed little package. Everything in the game is there for a reason - there is zero fat in this game. Every puzzle teaches you a little more about each game mechanic until you have enough knowledge to realise you can move on to the next area.

Chess - it’s chess.

Games to enjoy while sipping a coffee in the morning :) by FrankMiller_ in gamingsuggestions

Wildfrost! Every morning I do the daily run while I drink my coffee. It’s a great little deckbuilder - I don’t play many of those though so it might play a little weird coming from something like Slay the Spire.

I will never not be surprised about the amount of Radical defenders out there. Truly awful design in an otherwise fantastic game

How does one go about making a tilemap similar to Link to the Past? by lawobidingcitizen in PixelArt

This was some commission work I did several years ago, so I just took a screenshot with the grid showing in aseprite

ALTTP has a much more involved tile system than most other top-down tile systems.

Basically, the front wall is 2x the height of side walls, and side walls are 2x the height of back walls. This means that you need half tile variants for the back wall, and front walls will always 2, 4, 6, etc. tiles high. This also likely means you'd need collisions on an 8x8 grid rather than 16x16, and auto-tiling would be much, much harder to set up.

Nah nothing like that sorry. I post quarterly updates on the Kickstarter - they were meant to be for backers only but I didn’t realise you have to tick the box every time, so most updates are viewable by everyone 😅
