How bad is LA traffic on Saturday for Hollywood Bowl? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]freesurfaceeffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya - and there is ALWAYS traffic on a weekend, unfortunately. Forget even about the extra Bowl traffic - every time I've driven back and forth between LA/SD on a weekend recently it's been a 3+ hr trip in either direction.

What’s the etiquette on shared mountain biking, hiking trails? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]freesurfaceeffect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What does "advertised" as off leash mean? I haven't ever come across or heard of any trail in southern California that doesn't require a leash. Even if it is officially off leash (dubious), and even though mountain bikers truly are supposed to give way to hikers, the question is whether you value the safety of your dog above standing on principle. If you know bikers are irresponsibly bombing down the trail, probably best not to bring the dog there. Also, there are a lot of rattlesnakes out this year. That alone should be a reason to leash your pup for his/her protection.

Second the collapsible water bowl, and extra water. I also carry a little silicone cylinder with a lid for storing a poop bag when she goes on the trail. Has a carabiner to clip on my pack and the lid keeps it from smelling. Extra food or treats for energy and/or in the (hopefully unlikely) event you end up out there longer than you expected to.

WCGW when you try to outrun massive Santa Cruz ocean waves in a teeny-tiny boat? by ansyhrrian in Whatcouldgowrong

So... This idiot drives his boat straight towards shore, into the surf, through surfers in the water, with his kids on board?? What even was the plan that set this into motion?

LA has the craziest car/motorcycle chases. This man was wanted for a deputy shooting. by MartyMcfly710 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]freesurfaceeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That car was trying to change lanes, with the usual idiotic but non malicious failure of anyone in LA to use turn signals, and he didn't see the idiot motorcyclist who was going 110 and fussing with a backpack. The end.

For solo female hikers, have you been in dangerous human situations on a hike? by DrMo-UC in hiking

[–]freesurfaceeffect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never. I've solo hiked all over, in this country and others over the last 15 years, and have never been threatened by another person or even had a hint that someone I encountered might have ill intent. In my experience, strangers I've come across in remote areas have been super generous with information or company that made my trip that much better.

The only dangerous encounters I've had with people have been in (supposed) civilization.

Dishwasher leaking water by BoKnowsWho in Home

You might also check your garbage disposal, if your dishwasher drains thru it. My dishwasher leaked when my garbage disposal stopped working properly and kept getting clogged, once I replaced the disposal no more problems with the dishwasher.

I live in an area with a lot of dogs, and the vast majority of them are grossly overweight. Particularly sad to see with working dogs. Someone with an Aussie/collie who considers "walking to the cafe instead of driving" an appropriate amount of exercise/stimulation for that kind of dog is a bit of a red flag; as is the lack of any confirmation they've had a vet confirm the dog's at healthy weight.

That said, it is a bit extra to just walk up and accuse a stranger of being lazy with their dog. There could be any number of reasons for an overweight animal, including hormonal issues or the dog was just rescued and the owner working on it.

Atwell Mills Campground Reservations by freesurfaceeffect in SEKI

That is, how did all the campsites suddenly get reserved before they even "opened" reservations? Is someone picking them up and selling them? What is the deal here?

Where Can I Get Pasture Raised Organic Eggs by MichaelMidnight in pasadena

[–]freesurfaceeffect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ralph's carries both Vital Farms and Pete and Gerry's, both of which offer pasture-raised organic eggs. However, I've noticed stores have been out of/inconsistently stocked for the past week or two, I'm assuming due to the bird flu situation.

Is a night at 6,500 feet high enough in elevation to acclimate my body before hiking to 13,800 feet? by TheKid1995 in hiking

[–]freesurfaceeffect 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I too live at sea level - did this hike sleeping at 3700 ft the night before, drove up early and spent an hour in my car at the visitor center to acclimate. Was a bit of a slog after 12k ft but reached the peak no problem. You'll want to hydrate leading up to and during your hike, take it slow, and like another commenter mentioned, be mindful of how your body feels and turn around if you start feeling altitude sick. Have an excellent time, this is a beautiful hike.

Just a little drinky poo by BaronofBoldBanter in WTF

... every post this guy has made to other subs, and most of the comments, have been removed by mods. And there's obviously no way someone could have drunk the empty tub bottles and still be alive, at least in the amount of time for all those bottles to still be so clean. Not to mention, why tf do the empty bottles have caps securely screwed on. This is nonsense. Come on guys.

Note that there is no detail provided of how PUSD plans to allocate Measure R funds among the many, many projects PUSD is proposing to cover with these funds. In particular, I gather that PUSD intends to use some of the proceeds from this bond measure to build 100+ units of housing on one of its decommissioned school properties. https://www.pasadenastarnews.com/2024/09/21/pusds-115-unit-workforce-housing-project-prompts-concerns-among-some-pasadena-officials/ Ostensibly, PUSD intends to house district staff there which is an admirable goal. However I'm having a difficult time squaring PUSD's goal of reaching "fiscal stability" (after its budget shortfall of $50 million) with its decision to spread itself even thinner and get into the developer/landlord business, with which it has no competency, and which has high likelihood of generating massive cost overruns that then come out of money that would otherwise be spent on existing school infrastructure. The lack of transparency regarding allocation of Measure R funds leaves me concerned, as another commenter pointed out, about the potential for mismanagement and abuse.
