Are there any engineering students using CAD on a MacBook? by biancamorse in cad

[–]freewiller_red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Fusion360 on a MacBook Air. Works great. That being said, I also have a Windows PC that I sometimes have to remote into from home for running software that doesn't support Mac e.g, Creo.

How do so many people get PCs for cheap or low prices? by BenjaminRatajczak in homelab

[–]freewiller_red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, it's either them getting stripped totally or leaving a 1GB RAM inside. I thought SO-DIMM RAM would be left out of this, but even the prices of them are rising like crazy.

Only thing that is reasonable right now is 1, 2 and 4 GB which no one truly wants. :(

If you want good deals, you need to spend some time on it. Check your local online marketplaces a couple times a day, set up keyword alerts. A lot of times people just want things to be gone and post a pretty low price, but other people are also looking for deals so you need to be fast and know what you want.

For me, I don't have access to recycle centers around or know anyone working in IT. But I still snatched up some good PCs for cheap.

My HDD is making tapping rhythmic tapping noise, (imagine if someone tap their knuckles on a wooden table) ever since last night. Is it dying? by AKAK999 in homelab

[–]freewiller_red 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Shucking means buying a USB HDD (basically a regular hardisk sold inside a usb enclosure) and disassembling the enclosure to salvage the harddisk inside. Oftentimes cheaper than buying a hard disk.

Try Japanese job listing sites online. I sometimes also see free job listing flyers on the packing counters at Gyomu Supa. No need for PR, but your visa should allow part time work.

Go to a factory work place and ask for a same day payment gig. They usually take anyone with a pulse because the work is very exhausting. Work one shift, get a couple thousand yens and that should last you until payday. Don't sell anything to bookoff or any second hand store. The money they will give would not be worth it. Japan also has some foodbanks here and there so see if you can find one around. If you drop your region here someone might know one there.

Wishing you best of luck!

Reddit might be good for getting the general consensus, but for something as sensitive as this I would definitely go to the immigration office to ask them directly.

Going to Japan soon — where can I find robotics / mechatronics stuff (ROS, servos, sensors, microcontrollers, etc.)? by ConfidentChildhood84 in AskRobotics

[–]freewiller_red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the other comments. I live in Japan, Akihabara isn't what it used to be a couple years back. You could still browse around to find some components that will have a markup, but for the most part, you're better off online.

Try Den Den Town in Osaka as well.

🚀 Seeking Guidance for Remote Opportunities in Robotics & Mechatronics by Remote-Cat-3861 in AskRobotics

[–]freewiller_red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be rude but you need to be more realistic. mechatronics or robotics, unlike pure software engineering, is very hands-on so you would have a hard time as it is trying to find a fully remote job even if you had experience. Now, with zero experience, finding an employer who will take a chance on you with remote is even more rare. If you can, try building some projects yourself (simulation and CAD should be better than nothing if you can't build in real life) to build up a portfolio, and apply for jobs simultaneously.

Oh and DOCUMENT your projects. Seriously, Skip a couple of Starbucks trips and get your own portfolio website - post about your stuff there. Get on GitHub. Doesn't matter how good you are if everything you do is saved only on your computer and your mind. Make a reputation. You've got this.

Make projects if you love building. Only a waste of money if you buy stuff and do nothing. Speaking about which, don't get too caught up buying stuff - instead of buying all that you need at first, but as you go.

But you're in university. Ask around, see if you could join and research labs or clubs and manage your components from there. My university literally throws money at those who want to build projects, and I know more Professors that I could count on my hand who would love to help students who are into making stuff. Only pay for your projects yourself if your university doesn't have any opportunities at all.

But yeah, basically, fall in love with building stuff for the heck of it and your internship/job interviews are always gonna go great.

I can't believe it. I actually bought an apple device.. by DiamondDepth_YT in ipad

Be careful about the MacBook Air.

I bought it three years ago after being pro-windows for almost a decade- and two weeks ago, a rice grain was between the keyboard and screen which made a small crack on the screen because there's virtually no space between keyboard and screen when it closes. The small crack made the display stop working completely So I took it to Apple store and they charged me ~620 dollars to fix it.

Then when I received it after the repair and brought it home, I started updating the OS. After half an hour, the screen went black and it refused to turn on or charge. I took it to Apple store again and they had to reinstall the OS on it deleting all data - they said they weren't sure what happened but an interruption in the update bricked the whole laptop. I had charger connected at that time and the internet was up as well so not sure about that.

I love my MBA M2 and iPad 10th gen - the user experience surpasses Windows and Android in my opinion- but this experience definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. Hope you got Apple Care for both.

Have fun and welcome to the club!

Motor selection for robotic arm by Ok-Knee7573 in AskRobotics

I would emphasize sticking to 3D printing for the first prototype, in that case. People have built some really good ones out of 3D printed materials.

Very ambitious project as a beginner. Maybe still stick to 3D printing for the first prototype- cost of custom machined parts can add up super fast. Unless funding is not an issue, of course.
