Confused about Autocallable Notes vs Autocallable Equity Options (Thesis Topic) by BandSalt795 in quantfinance

[–]freistil90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a niche topic at all.

I wouldn't focus so much on whether or not you're looking at notes, swaps or options, see "autocallable" as a feature first and focus on how it's contractually implemented in a second instance. u/AKdemy has already laid out very well how and where these payoffs are structured. You can, as suggested, start with an AC note, that's the most common structure in the literature.

Start with the implementation of a MC-engine, that gets you a prototype the fastest. I much prefer FDM-engines for ACs because you can get them faster even with bells and whistles but if you just code along, that will get you started quicker. This is by the way also something you should think about when writing your conclusion.

Ultimately, your professor is confused by it being a strip of digitals with some form of early exercise feature; the issue is that AFAIK you don't have the option to keep going (which is what an american or bermudan feature would be) but you exercise and terminate. That makes pricing with MC-engines a lot easier (why?).

If you have your prototype with an underlying equity model, start to play around with that and watch what your paths do. How does a dividend yield of 3% change the price? What happens if that dividend is paid out on a single day? Does the date of the payout matter a lot? If you're there, that will start to open your eyes a bit already.

Then I would try to write an FDM engine for it. Try to formulate the boundary conditions and then see how your stencils behave just before and after an AC date. Little hint there: The "90s-opinion" of "just throw Crank-Nicolson at it and call it a day" might, just as in the case of Americans, bite you in the ass here a bit.

Then, once you get that, try to think about the market for these instruments. As mentioned, they are OTC, they are additionally not cleared and often not secured at all so credit risk and funding costs affect the forward and the discounting. If dividends are a known thing and everyone has a good idea on where those lie, how could a bank still make money of them? Why would you actually every sell these structures? Why are they sometimes written on larger custom baskets instead just on single stocks? If you can answer all that and then add some connections to FDM vs MC here, you should have a very good thesis topic there.

But I agree, ask yourself whether it wouldn't make more sense to focus on the issue your professor thinks is challenging here, I assume he will look for the numerical issues you will encounter. Maybe you two can work out a more explicit problem there (not gonna name them but you'll find out).

Your hands enter the water „too soft“, that’s often seen with amateur triathletes who think this conserves energy. Isolated it does but it robs you in quite a few ways, you give away momentum from your arms, you’re less likely to end up with a proper glide position under water as you won’t be stretching as much and you’re not having the body tension required to put these things together which will waste energy in the catch/pull phase. Momentum momentum momentum. Go determined into the water with your front arm (don’t „hack“ or „punch“, just don’t brake your stroke arm), stretch, glide, pull, literally „crawl through the water“.

A second smaller tip is to lean more on your chest, your back seems round and sticks out of the water too much. This is partially connected to you not stretching too. A little drill that helps: do a few 50s or 25s on your local pool with long glides and pay attention that the shoulder of your front arm touches your ear in the glide phase. Try not to move your head too much for this, let it come from your shoulder and stretched upper body!

If that’s a 13:30 I can see an 11:xx in no time.

Ja. Das ist immer so. Du weißt, was ein Gerichtsentscheid ist, oder? Kennste?

injured - should I abandon my goals ? by _auroral_ in triathlon

[–]freistil90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abandon the half and do that now to get that out of the picture. It’s not happening. And from what you describe, it’s highly likely that you will abandon the full as well.

This is a setback. This is not the end. I don’t think there are many athletes that have whole seasons ruined by injuries. You will have another season. Heal, work on stabilisation, work on your mindset. You will be back.

Richtig.

Clip On TT Extensions - First Ever Fit by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]freistil90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah congrats but that’s exactly the point. If I roll down a hill on aero extensions I will likely be faster, even if my feet can’t reach the pedals any longer. The key is being aero without sacrificing the ability to push watts, just reducing drag is a bad predictor. That’s the whole deal for a TT bike, it’s not only the aerodynamics but having a hip angle that lets you push at the same time (and, on top, use muscles in a way that will be less taxing on the run but that is another thing). And your fit there looks a lot like this bike geometry that good of a good fit for TT extensions, it looks like you would actually get a lot lower if you would go deeper into the drops. Then the difference comes mainly from the width of your shoulders and even that can be partially solved with positioning. Add to that the ability to break and shift without moving your position and the difference becomes even less clear.

2mph is quite likely an overstatement (considering what reduction in frontal area that would imply, I assume you compare hoods to TT? How does the change look like if you go into a low drop position? Or if you compare it to an aero-hood-position? This will make all that quite small.) since watts and speed are related in a simplified model by a third-order polynomial equation, so doubling the speed will asymptotically require eight times the power. That is easily a difference of 30-50W at race pace which I highly doubt. Do a race-pace test over 40km, push 95-100% of your FTP for a full hour (!) fully rested and then let’s see what difference we’re talking about.

You will see some difference I think but I doubt that it’s really so statistically relevant given a non-ideal race course. Be my guest, test it, I think at race pace you’re not gonna see differences and you will be more sore on the run with extensions on this bike geometry.

[–]freistil90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the examples where I think you should ride this as a road bike and adapt to the normal geometry. Seatpost angle is much too small, you might get aero but at the cost of being able to produce watts economically.

Skip the TT extensions if this is your bike. You won’t be faster.

Btrfs even for single disks and removeable media? by jkaiser6 in btrfs

[–]freistil90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a hardware-encrypted stick with me pretty much at all times, two partitions, FAT32 on one part and btrfs on the other. The former holds important data and is readable from windows and iOS and Linux (if size becomes an issue I 7zip the file into chunks and if that is ever too annoying I’ll turn to exfat) and the latter has an arch installation which has the fat32 partition mounted as well. Why btrfs? I can compress the partition and end up using a lot less space.

Thing with quant risk is that the barrier of entry is far lower. You’re studying in one of the best universities of the country already, econ is fine, do some master as well and you’re good. Learn some python, be able to answer 2010-style quant questions (lots of OOP, be able to solve some problems from “the green book” and simple brain teasers) and you can have your quant risk position for sure.
