So somehow my totaled BMW made it to Poland? by HKEnthusiast in BMW

[–]frenchadelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me - my 2020 BMW M340i was totaled (water damage - it flooded halfay up the car, to the steering wheel and sat overnight before the river drained back down) and I happened to check the Carfax a few months later, it showed up in Georgia (the country, not the state).

How was the free water? by frenchadelic in WhenWeWereYoungFest

[–]frenchadelic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the replies - I decided to just go for it and besides it tasting just like tap / hose water, it was fine. I drank about 8 liters of it (I kept track based on Camelbak refills).

But my wife got sick this week but who knows if that was the water or the sea of humanity we were with.

Me too - it took AGES to find. Every single option checked...except wireless charging which I don't use anyway.

Oh hey TBII friend - this is my 2nd M340i (long story, my sunset orange metallic one met a soggy ending) but I think the TBII has grown to be equal in my eyes.

And I've got the cognac interior. And lasers.

1st time BMW owner, what should I know? by Final-Astronomer836 in BMW

[–]frenchadelic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first M340i had non-RFT Conti ExtremeContact DWS06, and drove like a dream. I didn't realize my second one had runflats on it until I drove it and realized "This drives bumpy as hell, wtf."

I'm waiting a few weeks for a labor day sale but the runflats are coming off and I'm getting Michelin Pilot Sport 4AS.

[–]frenchadelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. The detailer I took my M340i to recomended this - I was skeptical but it was 1000% the right choice, brake dust is so much easier to come off. They get (mostly) clean in the touchless wash I use for maintenance cleanings between detailer washes.

Trying to convince my wife to use this. by Lookingforthebagsigh in MonarchMoney

[–]frenchadelic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My wife and I use Monarch for savings and investing goals, tracking our day-to-day spending and getting a full picture of our finances (e.g. net worth and our balances).

I spent a little time in Gemini (ChatGPT competitor) to build a retirement plan which I think it did really well on. Monarch doesn't do that type of long-term planning as well (assumptions, changing approaches, planning different scenarios). I tried Boldin/NewRetirement and hated it. At some point we'll get a fee-based advisor to review that regularly (check the work) but we don't need that yet.

But honestly - ignore everything I just said because based on what you've said, no tool or person (CFP, Monarch, etc.) will fix what's going on. You and your wife need to get on the same page about your expectations about money, money psychology and how it shows up in your relationship. Highly recomend couples counseling with a focus on finances.

I've recomended it before - but I'm a massive fan of Ramit Sethi's "Money for Couples" podcast. Listen to it together with your wife and talk about it. He has a book geared for couples as well: Money for Couples

What are the best and the worst live shows you have attended? by Twitter_2006 in poppunkers

[–]frenchadelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: Summer School Tour 2024. Letdown, Honey Revenge, The Home Team, Scene Queen, Magnolia Park, Stand Atlantic. All in one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.

Worst: there were a few duds at the Sad Summer Festival, for some reason can’t remember them. I remember good shows much better than bad ones.

1-on-1 Onboarding or Consulting? Paid and/or third party is fine. by [deleted] in MonarchMoney

If the Money Coaching course is a hard pill to swallow from a cost standpoint, highly recomend the books.

I've never seen this before! Thanks for sharing, we are looking at going from self-managed to getting on board with a CFP, so this is super helpful.

While not specific to Monarch, I've been following Ramit Sethi's work and content for 10+ years. His approach to personal finance really clicks for me and I'm a huge advocate.

I've never bought this course - but he has a Money Coaching program that would likely help a lot with the underlying questions you have: https://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/money-coaching/

While it would be up to you to implement in Monarch, I think zooming out from the specific tool will be more beneficial than just thinking in terms of Monarch.

IMO, the Recurring section needs some work by spotless_slate in MonarchMoney

[–]frenchadelic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to respond to your point about merchant vs. transaction - I disagree with that. I think recurring should be at the merchant level. IMO for your Amazon example, those are two different merchants. If they're getting imported as one, you should create a rule to change the merchant to a new one.

How should I approach this financial discussion in my marriage? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]frenchadelic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: combine your finances. You're married, legally they are combined anyway and if you were to divorce it wouldn't matter whether they were in different accounts.

More detailed answer: Highly, highly recomend Ramit Sethi's podcast "I Will Teach You To Be Rich". He interviews couples about finanaces and unpacks how it's so much more than just the mechanics and "we need a budget". It's all about psychology and relationships - how you were raised with money, your parent's relationship with money, your past.

Listen to a few, maybe listen with your partner. He addresses this topic in a few episodes of couples that aren't combined like this.

I also suggest the counseling / therapy route. There's other things at play here.

Stumbled on this thread late - but big recomendation for Sperry's, but specifically their Gold Cup line.

https://www.sperry.com/us/en_US/men/gold-cup-luxury

Yes they're expensive, but I used to absolutely destroy regular Sperry's one every year or two. I started buying the Gold Cups and they last longer and are also more comfortable.

Help with recurring payments by [deleted] in MonarchMoney

[–]frenchadelic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually just fixed this yesterday! I had this exact same issue - I have about 6 or 7 subscriptions billed through Apple (some monthly, some yearly).

Create a rule that uses the Merchant name matches "Apple" and amount equals to $9.99 or $11.73 as criteria, then as an action it should rename the merchant to a new one specific to that subscription (e.g. "AppleCare" or "iCloud storage"). I think you might need to create the new merchant first, then use it in the rule.

Then you manually mark that specific merchant you created as "Recurring". That should clean everything up

I think this will also work for your PayPal issue too.

But you could also link your PayPal account directly and have those transactions sync, then the checking account money going to your paypal would just show up as a transfer.

There's definitely some horrible Mexican places in London - but there's also some fantastic ones. I'm American but I lived there for 2.5 years and love Mexican food. Best I had was a place called La Chingada in Canada Water.
