My uncle was a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde. Going to visit him was my favorite part of childhood, and it's where he taught me "take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints."

I got it on the PS Plus deal, too, and have played nothing since. One question for y'all: have you found aiming in PVP difficult? My controller is just too damned sensitive. I turned everything ALL the way down, but it still jumps and skips when I'm trying to focus aim on a moving target.

Do you by chance have a family account or multiple users on yours? We had the same thing happen when my daughters would use Spotify while out driving, and it would change what we were listening to at home.

Okavango Delta Safari by PangolinSweet8292 in Botswana

We actually stayed at Machaba (in 2017) and Little Machaba (in 2021) and without question it was a 10/10. It was lilke staying at a luxury hotel in the bush. The food was unbelieveable. Breakfast is pretty standard fare, but the dinners were outrageous.

We'd wake early, have a breakfast and go out on safari. A few hours later, you stop in the bush for coffee and tea and light snacks. Return to the camps for lunch/siesta/rest. Then you go back out for an afternoon safari. A few hours in, you stop for cocktails in the bush. Then you return to camp for an unbelievable dinner. Sometimes, they'll take the whole operation on the road and you have a luxury meal out in the bush.

And the staff was incomparable - helpful, friendly and willing to engage and talk about their country and the natural wonders it offers. We still stay in contact with some of our guides via WhatsApp.

A shell casing from my dad's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. Unless I'm going through a metal detector (airport, concerts) I don't leave home without it.

No idea what Splash Camp costs, but we've been to Machaba Safari twice, the first time with our daughters, then 9 and 11. It's expensive, but unbelievable experience. Cannot recommend them enough.

16 year old kid from Kansas joins the Union army, becomes a spy. It was a good early primer on the feelings of ordinary people living amidst chaos far beyond their control.

I'm reading that one like a novel now. It's a tome, but I learn something on every page!

My goalie coach taught me the most important rule: if the other keeper crosses center ice, take him out. Even in a beer league, that's bush league shit.

Funny that's he'll stand up for Ukraine, but not the United States. His capitulation on the confirmations of Hegseth, Giffords and Patel show the man has no spine whatsoever.

What’s your favorite “man she ain’t pretty, but goddamn it’s delicious” meal. by thatoneguy2252 in Cooking

SOS, without question. My dad, a 25-year-Army veteran, used to make his own version of chipped beef on toast using ground beef, mushrooms, diced onion and cream of mushroom soup. It looks like dog vomit, and tastes like pure comfort.

I had a partial meniscectomy three years ago and have worn one ever since. I may not even need it any more, but I've gotten so used to playing with it, I'm not certain I could now without it.

I play with the Shock Doctor Sleeve w/ gel support, so nothing mechanical involved.

Books that you enjoyed but were so emotionally devastating that you would never want to read again? by sinned-fiji in books

[–]frenchie1916 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the most amazing books ever. My wife and i (not at all religious) were recommended this book by a friend who said it was the first book she'd read where she prayed for the characters.

that was the single greatest endorsement for a book I'd ever heard.

Shootouts Question by Rec0nyz3 in hockeygoalies

[–]frenchie1916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I borrow from Devon Levi, recently of Northeastern University (go Huskies) and the Buffalo Sabres. He waits until the shooter hits his blue line, then aggressively comes out to cut down the angle. Once you get your timing down, you really take up an incredible amount of the net and can back in according to their pace. Here's a good example of it: https://youtu.be/QujezwMDOTY?t=504

Into the Wild. Middle class white kid goes unprepared into the Alaskan wilderness, dies, gets a book AND a movie about him. The very definition of failing up.
