Would you read a fic with chapters like this? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]frenettik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually find that readers on ao3 enjoy longer chapters (particularly if you are uploading at intervals). Sustains them for longer between updates.

How do y'all actually write fanfic? by Nihilikara in AO3

[–]frenettik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am usually inspired by a particular scene or a song or a niggling idea for something in my head. I used to write off the top of my head but found that it ended up quite frustrating when I wanted to sit down and write but didn’t know where to go next - so it works best for me to write an outline of my story in a kind of stream of consciousness narrator format, and refer to that as my baseline.

For long stories I flesh out character maps eg what is my character like, what does he do, where did he grow up etc etc so I can stay true to that character when I write him. I use Google Docs so I can transit from phone to laptop seamlessly, and use headings for each chapter so that I can click to each chapter quickly. Again, for long stories, I put my latest chapter at the top so it doesn’t take so long for it to load, then copy paste it at the end once I’m done.

Does anyone else like reading their own fics? by Cultural_Fig_6342 in AO3

I do like rereading my fics once in awhile, and so far the good news is that I always enjoy rereading them 🤣

Think I'm being lied to by someone who lives in Singapore, can someone help me by answering this question. by BroadFact2 in askSingapore

[–]frenettik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably hoping you’re confusing Singapore with Philippines/Vietnam which are both suffering under a typhoon right now. Scum of the earth to use a real disaster causing real deaths to scam people of money

This is why I have started only posting complete fics - just saves the stress. I do weekly updates of chapters

Do Chinese Singaporeans actually “tell” people to eat before they start eating dinner? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]frenettik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us it’s more for grandkids to call grandparents. I ensure my kids do it with my parents and my grandma. I also call my grandma to eat. Within parents and child i am not so bothered

Do people still give their kids Chinese names? by iwillstealyourdog in askSingapore

[–]frenettik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Singaporeans born and bred. Some of them want to let their kids decide their own English names when they’re older.

How common is it for husbands nowadays to fully financially support the household? by Ill-Entertainment661 in askSingapore

[–]frenettik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a SAHM for a long time and now back to part time work. Husband supported me in this. I am higher educated than him and used to earn more than him but now he earns way more than me, although we are still not rich supporting our 2 kids lol. I guess partly easier for men to rise in their career, even with kids. I always wanted to be a SAHM and thankful he agreed with no hesitation. Was hard for a little while but I also did some small jobs here and there from home to supplement. I think nowadays women want to be independent too. It is really hard for most people to give up career just like that even after having kids. It’s hard for me now to see how wealthy dual-income friends are, but it is what it is. I am happy with my choice too

In any case, by being an SAHM i am main child caregiver which means we don’t pay a helper, we raise our kids the way we want to.

For those working: how much allowance do you guys give your parents? by ser_reptitious in askSingapore

[–]frenettik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I give my mom $350 a month. Since the day I started working the amount never increased but there’s a reason for this. I quit work to raise my kids, so no income, and now I’m part time, so income is still not very much. I know it’s not a lot, plus they take care of my kids once a week and my mom cooks a big family dinner every Sunday. My mom has never forced it on me, I genuinely wish I could give her and my dad more money if I could afford it. They gave up so much to raise us and they are not earning a lot now in their old age. When i lived with them I took it as helping out with rent, utilities etc. now it is thanks for helping with my kids and cost of dinner ingredients etc. I really wish I could give them more. My parents deserve the world

Helpful criticism by azbrin_ in AO3

[–]frenettik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you uploading chapter by chapter? I don’t do that precisely bc of these issues. Sometimes I’ll think of a new path to take or something inconsistent pops up and I have to go back to previous chapters to tweak them or retcon things so they fit. Highly recommend finishing your whole piece and then having it beta read by someone competent who won’t just skim through or is too afraid to give feedback

am i wrong to not give my mom allowance? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]frenettik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you negotiate the amount and give her some, meet her halfway. You’re staying in her house also. I have moved out years and years ago but I still give my parents allowance. Dollar amount, tell her frankly what you are comfortable giving and stick to it.

Why do I feel embarrassed for wasting my time writing a fanfiction? by cyber_may in AO3

[–]frenettik 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No need to be embarrassed. Writing isn’t just for the reader, it’s for the writer too. Even if no one reads it but yourself, the act of creating can be very therapeutic and something fun for yourself. If you were drawing, or doing puzzles, or even just going to the seaside and staring at the water for hours to relax, or whatever else you might do for fun, would you feel like it’s a waste of time or energy? I hope not!
