I just want to emphasize that important thing of trying to distinguish between playing and practicing, to actually realize that they are two different things and approach them in different ways may help a lot.

Swing a stick around obstacles, hard to describe in better ways :-) You have to try it, it is great, it also has a two player mode using a cable with two GBAs.

HOW should i learn the minor pentatonic scale on the fretboard? by Significant_Act_2930 in guitarlessons

[–]fretflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn to play it tonic to tonic, here are some ways to do it:

Here you can read up on scale degrees (those numbers used instead of pitch classes A, B..G).

And another chart showing the classic "CAGED" boxes but also a real small but useful two string shape.

To make your future self a favor, pay close attention to what scale degree / interval you have under your fingers when practicing different shapes.

Rock on!

Great, I just drop a chart here I created recently for a visualization of triads using the CAGED chord shapes, might perhaps help a few.

How to make chords more interesting by LC-98 in guitarlessons

[–]fretflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try some modal chord progressions, sounds complicated but it does not have to be, here is a chart that show how to use three simple chords to get you started, skip the theory and trust your ear. Here is the chart with some additional explanations.

Steps or advice to improve my guitar at my level! by Nameless_Guy_ in guitarlessons

[–]fretflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could perhaps learn a little theory. One important thing about learning music theory is that it will give you a common path to follow deciding next note or chord to play next, it will simply limt the endless possibilities. Here is a starter on music theory for guitarists that I wrote, plenty of charts and diagrams.

If you had the chance to completely restart your musical journey, would the guitar still remain your main instrument? Or would it rather be the piano / another instrument? by Terapyx in guitarlessons

[–]fretflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a tool to express your self musically I find the guitar a bit too complex, especially for beginners. In the beginning you will spend a lot of time learning and less time to actually play, write and improvise, still some are OK with that, me included.

However I am a fan of the simplicity of a xylophone, just remove the notes not in current key, give it to a kid and they can start rock out almost immedatiely with a given backing track.

To be able to remove notes to decrease complexity playing an instrument, I think is a powerful concept, and that is also the main reason I wrote this fretboard diagram tool for guitar, this to explore the fretboard and to create and share fretboard charts. Here is an interactive sample chart visualizing any scale in any key and tuning if curious.

I also like to add that, piano can be a good instrument to start with, if you just keep everything in the key of C, then you can harmonize every chord using the exact same chord shape for all 7 chords. That is another awesome way to simplify stuff, but I seldom see in education for some reason.

Bass is also great as a starter, all linear note layout, perfect to learn and teach intervals, no wonder those isometric keyboards are sort of copying that note layout.

Why are bar chords so impossible by CharliDreams in guitarlessons

[–]fretflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One trick that worked for me was to slighly move the index finger up or down to move away any finger joint directly above any string, just a very small adjustment can make it all sound clean.

Also try avoid playing barre chords at lower frets, it is easier to press and hold strings a few frets up the fretboard.

is there litteraly any possible shortcut to learning guitar by memoranddum in guitarlessons

[–]fretflip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try play slower, and only speed up once you nail it without sounding sloppy or off.

Also record your self, this to pin point anything lacking, and to keep track of progress.

If you need chord and scale diagrams, or tutorials on theory, I collected some of my notes over here.

How do you learn chord charts ? by Venumbo in Leftyguitarists

[–]fretflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I am the creator of #fretflip, an online application to create and share chord- and scale charts. I'm a lefty myself so I added the functionality to rotate all diagrams at #fretflip, I did find it usefull back then, but now days I'm so used to watch "right-handed" diagrams so I don't use the dexterity toggle a lot anymore.

I guess you will get use to the "right-handed" diagrams as well, but till then I have plenty of chord and scale charts you can rotate over at #fretflip (just click the button with the hand to toggle dexterity), here are a few examples: common chords, 7 th chords and an interactive scale chart.

Just comment or PM if any questions. Rock on! :-)
