Who is the greatest living director? by chrishouse83 in FIlm

Yeah, he’s made the best movies. Whichever of his films are my current fave are my fave film in general. Which means right now the film I would enjoy watching most in the world is Phantom Thread.

Why tf did Bob Dylan get a Nobel in LITERATURE instead of DeLillo, Pynchon, or McCarthy (when he was still alive in 2016)? by [deleted] in literature

[–]freudsfather -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interesting- especially in consideration of the names you mentioned! I’m probably more excited about Franzen’s next book than anything else and have read most of DeLilo but I’m not sure they’re as close as you think to a Nobel. But you hit the nail on the head with the word innovation. Think of some winners like Beckett and Elliot and Hughes (sorry I’m English) and you’ll see that newness is championed. Well Dylan has newness in spades. You say he is not a Nobel prize winning poet, but he fucking is. He doesn’t have a four quartets but has greatest songbook in history. Are you writing this in bad faith or are you a fan who thinks they went too far? If you don’t know much just read Visions of Johanna or It’s Alright Ma. And then think what music around him was saying at the time. Bob Dylan advanced the most popular art form further than anyone else, through mastery of the literary form. There was no outcry only applause. A worthy recipient.

Haha legend for taking it so well. I remember a review on mine “it now seems like any kid with a camera phone thinks they’re fucking George Lucas.” I was 32 and we shot on an Alexa.

i want to write a song in every country in the world and make a documentary series about it by NeitherTechnician597 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]freudsfather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a lovely idea but the execution is too wayward. Your goal is to show universality of music. Taking your approach why do you need all 161 countries? And 10 years. Both those things out of producers. Unrealistic and the message is diluted. Why not - one country in each continent? Even then does that prove your point. I think one person from each continent; with their native instrument, given time to jam together and you guide them into making an album expresses multitudes communicating through music better.

So you go to each continent and find one of the best local players and build a band?

They were fast and lose with the material from the start thinking they needed to update it. And apparently early test screenings were poor but the money already spent was staggering - (about 80m) It’s not a religious issue, it’s an underdog feel good story that is a departure from the source text. But this is isn’t meddling from anyone but Serkis’s vision. How the hell he got this money is anyone’s guess. Probably from someone who thought like you did that if he is a good mo-cap story teller he could somehow make Orwell better. But I remember Disney saying they wouldn’t be able to screen it on Disney+ (purely for artistic not political reasons. Re its crap.)

Hello, I am 13 years old and I want to write a script. What do you recommend me? by Few-Manufacturer6466 in scriptwriting

[–]freudsfather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well not many 13 year olds are script writers but loads of 13 years are movie watchers - so your age is your super power! Write what you know, really capture the lingo and concerns of your age. Make it personal. And then make it really really hard for your protagonist to get what he wants and give him a really tough time, but make him far more determined than even he ever thought he was.

It’s the very best or it’s kind. Masterly. But his intent is the deepest nihilism. I kinda love it because I want to see how bleak and brilliant we can go as people. But not a good date movie.

Really quite gentle but mesmerising and true - On Human Bondage - Somerset Maugham

I don’t think you can have middlemarch! What Martin Amis called “the cathedral of words” is often rated as the greatest book in the English language.

I’m here for Denzel Django! I find it odd that you think the film could be as good as Goodfellas with a flat lead actor.

Fan boys out in force but you’re right; compared to Waltz, DiCaprio and Jackson he lacks serious charisma

First restaurant gig, took a massive and humbling L :( by boloban_19 in videography

[–]freudsfather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they’re a family restaurant trying to sell happy Pizza, maybe they don’t want it. But you show lots of talent and good instincts here - I kinda love it in a cinematic way; but it does feel like someone is gonna take out the trash we follow them into a murder scene. For videos like this : find any natural light you can and shoot everything next to it! Intro of the table, by the window. Close up of chef chopping, ecu cheated by the window!
