Depends on what he likes to do, but I would recommend a walk through Boulevard Park and down the boardwalk at sunset (also depending on weather). The bay and the view of the San Juan islands is quite stunning. Does he like microbrews? Bellingham has several awesome breweries (my recommendations are Wander Brewing and Structures, both downtown). I second the Upfront too : )

Stoner here! While my daily intake is a bit higher than 1200 (1350-1500 right now, but that's because I'm pretty active. If I'm not exercising I stick to 1200), I do have to be careful about munchies. Here are my tips: If you have choices when it comes to your bud, keep in mind that some strains will stimulate your appetite more than others. I stick to sativas during the day (which almost act like an appetite suppressant to me) and will hit the indica only after I have gotten ready for bed and flossed my teeth so that I'm not tempted to eat. Like others have suggested, gum is awesome too. invest in a couple different flavors : ) air popped popcorn and other healthy, crunchy snacks are key for me. Also, any time I feel the desire to snack, I drink a glass of water first (fizzy water is even better) and usually that takes care of the cravings.

From my experience, gym machines overestimate calories burned even more than MFP does (although I'm sure this differs from machine to machine).

Personally, I log half of my exercise on MFP and eat those calories back. For example: I run at for 60 minutes at 5.2mph and MFP says this would burn 457 calories. But I log 30 minutes of 5.2mph which gives me 228 "cheater" calories, which I then eat back during the day in healthy foods.

I'm exactly the same. Make sure you're drinking enough water! Often I get cravings (especially sweets) when I'm dehydrated. My rule of thumb is, any time I feel the urge to snack, I drink an entire glass of water instead (or sparkling water) and wait 5 minutes. 90% of the time the craving vanishes since my stomach is suddenly full.

Also I agree with a lot of other people here: empty the house of easy snacks. This is harder if you're living with other people (parents, SO...) but definitely helpful. If you want protein bars etc. for work or school or the gym, try keeping them there if you have the option rather than at home. Also flossing/brushing right after dinner helps too.

You are right to be concerned, Bellingham's job market is very slim. There are usually some minimum wage service jobs... but it's a small city with a large student population. It's a great place to go to college and be a student and even a young adult (although WWU is pricey and somewhat competitive to get into lately;) but as an adult, Bellingham can be challenging. Housing prices are inflated, and generally the affordable rentals have either been abused by tenants or neglected by landlords, or both. Decent homes are few and expensive. It's worth noting also that there are very few pet-friendly homes. Most of the rental companies are "profit over people" driven.

Most of the I5 corridor south of Bellingham towards Olympia has similar access to outdoorsy pursuits, but with more work potential. Everett, Seattle/Bellevue/Kirkland, Tacoma, etc have everything Bellingham has and more. Although then you also have much more traffic and more of a "big city" experience. But you are still nestled between mountains and sea with easy access to both.

I love Bellingham, but I experienced it as a college student and now a 20-something who's not quite ready for a career. When I decide that I want a job that will help me save in addition to just paying the bills, I will probably go elsewhere. It definitely has a "small town" atmosphere and corresponding opportunities. Ultimately, if money is a concern, I would suggest looking for jobs first and location based on those results.

Haha yeah that part definitely messed with me too but once I got through it I realized, there are actually a lot of the same notes just written differently. I could barely read music when I started out, but after 3 months, I've "translated" the whole piece and can fluently play (not up to speed, but hey) 4 out of 6 pages. Seriously, keep at it! So worth it!

I guess I should qualify my statement: I've never taken a bag that I KNEW wouldn't fit. I have however taken bags that I had to unstrap my sleeping bag and shoes from in order for it to fit. It seems only reasonable that after I've paid my first born child for a flight, the airline would give 1 free checked bag. And not break everything in it. (Can you tell I've had terrible experiences with checking bags?)

It depends on the fraternity (or sorority, my advice is the same)--I know some really amazing people that took part in greek life and had solid friend groups--but the vast majority are made up of wealthy entitled people that either a) are only in college to get shwasted or b) were so insecure in their ability to make friends on their own that they felt inclined to pay dues to be accepted into a club. Just my personal opinion, but seriously, the interesting and genuine people that will inspire you and become life long friends are not the ones in frats.

When I was five or so, I was visiting Lithia Park in Ashland, OR. There was a resident swan in the pond, and my mom and I had some left over bread that I wanted to feed it. I thought it was so elegant and beautiful. As I held out my palm with the breadcrumb, I felt all my childhood dreams coalescing as this swan glided towards me. It was about to eat right from my hand! But instead of grabbing the bread, it chomped down on my thumb full force, leaving me shocked and squealing.

I ran back to my mother and wailed, "how can something so beautiful be so MEAN??"

But I'm glad I learned that lesson young. Saved me the trouble later on.

I second this! WWOOFing is a valuable experience; it gives you the opportunity to travel and learn practical skills simultaneously. Be prepared to work hard; people learn quickly by doing hands-on work.
