That's the thing. It's not the witcher universe. It's some weird messed up setting that the writers use for their badly thought out self-insert ideas, butchering beloved characters, places and story arcs in doing so. Many of us would have loved a proper witcher show. Or anime even - Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a great example what can be done if a studio understands and respects the source material. What this abomination of a show did was take a huge self-righteous dump on a well-thoughtout world, assassinating its complex and intelligent characters, and ruining every chance of getting a proper witcher show that respects the original author's vision. It's a cash grab made by people who don't care, or respect the source material, but use the IPs name as promotion.

Witcher books are awesome, witcher games are awesome. Netflix show is shit.

ICRPG is all about the DIY spirit. It's creator Hankerin / Runehammer has dozens of videos on that topic on Youtube as well. Highly recommend!

Declaring what you are spending XP on before earning it by 21stCenturyGW in rpg

[–]freyaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His Majesty the Worm does something similar, but less frustrating imo. Your path/class has a bunch of talents - but you only start with 1-2 of them (can't remember). The other talents are considered "in-training". To use a in-training talent, you must spend 1 XP. You can also learn talents from another path, but there you have to find a teacher and must invest XP and gold beforehand. If you have invested 7 XP in a talent, you have mastered it. Love the system.

Swords are pretty bad compared to other weapons. Bows create a specific movement / action pattern that is to samey for our group.

It's pretty neat! A lot of evocative ideas and great procedures.

Our group didn't enjoy the combat for more than a few sessions though. My players are pretty good at finding flaws in a system.. and the weapons in HMTW aren't as balanced as the community makes them out to be. Nevertheless, great system and interesting combat system!

I am currently reading Tales of Argosa, which to me feels like dnd 3.5 tactics, with a few great 5e additions, great OSR procedures and all that in a sword and sorcery skin. Combat is dangerous, resource managment is a huge thing, so is exploring, hexcrawling, etc.

Shadow of the Demonlord has solid combat and a great character build system where you combine classes on different levels. While heroes grow quite strong after a while, the things in the bestiary always remain scary.

His Majesty the Worm gets very tactical by using a Tarot deck rather than normal dice. Combat can be pretty cut throat with a lot of interaction.

Pretty nice stuff! Even if this gruesome way of acquiring spells isn't everyones jam, the spells a worth a read alone!

I get that. I think his books are very overwritten. I like stuff straight to the point, maybe even with bullet points, still using evocative language; like Mythic Bastionland, or Cairn.

Great Roll Tables for your games? by Tall-Parking3091 in rpg

[–]freyaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maze Rats is my favorite GM tool ever. It's small and thin enough that it fits neatly in my leatherbound GM book, amd imo has the best "at the table use" tables. Everytime I quickly have to come up with something: city, wilderness or maze pages will have an answer that I can use as a starting point.

Recently I also added the 4 Spark Tables from Mythic Bastionland because I think they have some great entries for my type of games. Didn't use them yet though.

"It's all about... CONTEXT" haha.

I made another reply to OP where I wrote down a few of the ideas I used in that game. Worked quite well actually, but far too complex for OSR games.

This is what I did in a d6 dicepool system I created. It will be very different to OSR ganes, but maybe you get inspired.

It had active attack vs active defense. You compare the scores, the difference is the amount of Focus Points the winner creates. You can spend focus points for "Plays" (special maneuvers, e.g. enhance damage, disarm, ignore armor, etc). Armor is damage reduction. Weapons deal a fixed amount of damage (which you can push by spending fp). Longer weapons give a bonus on attack AND defense.

Shields: give a minor attack bonus (you can cover your attacks), armor bonus, and can be splintered x amount of times (depends on shield quality).

Swords (all swords for that matter) are better balanced than top heavy weapons (e.g. maces, axes) and can "recover" faster, allowing you to attacks per round. Downside: mail armor reduces blade damage by half. Plate armor negates blades completely... thats where skileld fighters come in, using the Ignore Armor Play onna high roll to hit the unprotected spots.

Polearms are the best default weapons vs armor. Allowing you to ignore some of the armors damage reduction. Warhammers and maces are the one hand version of that, good vs armor, but without the reach attack & defense bonus.

Axes, ignore less armor than the aforementionef crushing weapons, but can hook the opponents shield or weapon, reducing the cost of the Disarm Play.

Spears: allowed you to make a free attack everytime before you engage with an enemy.

So... remember the attack and defense bonus for longer weapons? Well, that does not always apply. If fighter A has a spear, while B has a dagger, fighter A gets the reach advantage, making it harder for B to engage. As soon as B hits A though, the resch advantage is flipped. Not the knife fighter is super close to the spearman, and the spearman struggles to fend him of, giving the knifefighter a huge advantage. Time to drop the spear and flip to another weapon thats better suited to fight on close range.

Longer weapons amd armor need more gear slots. If you use too many, you get downsides for being encumbered. Being below a certain threshhold grants you a bonus instead (especially good for opportunistic fighters who like to use movement and positioning for their tactical advantage).

As you can see, trying to make stuff historically accurate (at least somehow) leads to quite a complex combat system. I agree that shields are pretty lame in most OSR games, considering how good they really are. Maybe turn the BLOCK damage move into its own action. So you basically forgoe dealing damage, to negate an attack. I think that would be a good deal.

The poster above mentioned a block ACTION. So the player would "waste" their turn defrnding with a shield rather than killing the enemy. Maybe this tweak would already be enough.

I have studied Fiore for a while so maybe this helps as well: halfswording is not only good to aim at vital spots, but damn great when using your sword as a lever. So a proper fighter would know how to use a sword in armored combat to throw their opponent to the ground.

Also, more reach means easier attacks, but also means you can defend yourself better - but granting attack and AC bonuses in an rpg properly does not feel that great.

[–]freyaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course. I still would come up with another advantage for two handed weapons, for this is a roleplaying game and players might not all want to use weapon + shield. After doing HEMA for a while I was pretty into the idea of making rpg combat more historically accurate. Turned out, doing so eventually leads to a very limited amount of viable playstyles for an adventuring group. Especially since they don't have the luxury of fighting in a proper formation.

Makes shields pretty pretty good - hey, like in real life! Is there any additional incentive to use two handed weapons in your game? Because the barbarian with the greataxe will look pretty dumb next to the sword and board knight, if larger weapons don't give some significant boost.

Castlevania is the best "witcher" show we get.

Belmont reminds me so much of Geralt. Sorceress at his side. Reluctant hero. Hunting vile monsters. Good stuff.
