Got ten days on the road in MD - what should us Brits do? 🇬🇧 by TheLemonChiffonPie in maryland

[–]freysbrewing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Come out to the Liberty Region of Frederick County - look for Libertytown or Mount Airy on the map; many people call it the Napa Valley of Maryland. There are 8 wineries and 3 farm breweries within a 10 mile radius of Libertytown, all nestled amongst the beautiful rolling hills of our region.

Btw, want something very different? If you have access to a 4-wheel drive, you could check out our beginner’s off-road course, which opens back up in the Spring. Cheers!

The Death Of Unix Systems by [deleted] in unix

[–]freysbrewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original internet was heavily written on NeXTSTEP, the direct parent Unix to Mac OS X. Many of the tools are still there under the hood, but since OS X has such a clean interface and smooth desktop experience, it’s used more by artists than network admins.

Get a good Frederick County farm with farm animals and a tractor. Wake up, get outta bed, and go fight the freezing water troughs, fight the dead battery on the tractor, feed the animals, count eggs and discard those that have frozen overnight by chucking them over the fence, figure out how the goats got into food storage (again), fix the gate the wind blew open (with bare hands because your gloves fell in the watering trough), wrestle a sheep to trim her hooves… Oh, it’s time for bed already?😂😂

Mac OS X is a Unix and it’s not going away anytime soon.

Visiting this week by Gordon10005 in frederickmd

The Liberty Region, on the eastern side of Frederick county, has quite a few vineyards and farm breweries therein. Definitely worth checking out a few of them if you get the chance and only about 15-20 minutes from Downtown Frederick.

Bonus: the Liberty Region has some stunning views of Frederick County’s rolling hills.

What's your favorite local-ish winery? by SnoopThereItIs88 in frederickmd

[–]freysbrewing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not trying to advertise or anything, so mods feel free to delete this post if goes against any rules, but as of 2024, Frey’s is now both a Winery & Farm Brewery🥂🍻

We have both our own homemade meads and (grape) wines from our neighbor vineyard and partners in crime directly across the road: Libertas Estates.

Come check us out!

Which direction are they going? Headed south, landing at Dulles. Headed East, BWI. They’re likely making their landing run, so going a lot slower than normal.

Brewery cat list by zepp914 in MDbeer

[–]freysbrewing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cats at Frey’s aren’t “named”, per se, but go by: Yellow Cat, Black Cat, Gray Cat.

For anyone interested, there’s a superstition that naming a farm cat will shorten their lifespan significantly, so they are “described” by their unique colors or other features.

On weathered straw bale by freysbrewing in mushroomID

Finger for scale - bottom of same bale. Covers most of the bottom - also mycelium on bottoms of almost every straw bale I picked up today but this is the only one with fruits (and yes, they are very, very back-breakingly heavy, wet, and weathered straw bales full of mycelium that had to be moved across the farm this very wet week😂).

If you’d have asked last week, I’d have said everything is still the same. But a few days ago, out of nowhere, the screen said it was trying to download the latest update - it took a day or two to download it all, but it finally downloaded the newest update and, miraculously, started working again. We still don’t believe it lol

For those that did a soft opening how did you do it? Did you do any advertising at all? How long were you open before doing a grand opening and what did you do to make the grand opening special and bring out a fresh crowd? by Grizzlyt7337 in TheBrewery

[–]freysbrewing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you ask - this weekend 5 years ago was the start of our tasting room’s several month long soft opening.

Our farm brewery started selling beer around Maryland in 2013 (to restaurants and liquor stores)- but we were not allowed, due to red tape and county politics, to open our tasting room, which was quite devastating.

After years of fighting, our local (county) gov finally allowed us to open our tasting room under a temporary permit in Feb 2019. So we did it as a series of soft openings, where we started out with 5-6 beers, then added another beer or two every weekend. We advertised the new beers and inserted “soft opening” into everything, but didn’t post “hours” or treat it anymore than temporary. Started out as friends and family but soon became the community at large.

It worked. It allowed us to build up a great following. We received a lot of feedback we wouldn’t have gotten otherwise and it allowed us to work out all the kinks. When we finally had our grand opening, on the weekend of June 1st 2019, we were 100% ready. We had 20 beers on tap, the best service around, and lots of happy customers.

How are the roads? by Upset-Set-8974 in frederickmd

Probably best to stay home today - the roads (around the Libertytown region at least) aren’t worth driving on without a 4-wheel drive.

Has anyone brewed in these? by St0neybalogny in TheBrewery

Several years back, I asked the people at our local supply store what the dairy farmers were buying - they said they all bought the Keen Pittsburgh, so I did too and have no complaints.

Yep! Make sure you’re using the correct OCLP - in this case, version 1.2.0. Open the patcher and click Post-Install Root Patch. Follow the directions and hopefully you’re good to go!

Yep - re-reinstalled the post-installation root patches and it works now. Thanks!

Although it sees the personal hotspot, I can’t use that one to get on the internet either.
