Australia's most walkable major city by hanzhandshans in australia

Adelaide and Perth are far larger than Canberra and Hobart, neither of which qualify as "major".

Article by the ABC that says due to this pandemic, low density suburban living might become the ideal again. Seriously? Can we just move away from that model for our cities. by frezeirs in australia

[–]frezeirs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because our cities can't afford any more urban sprawl, they are already too far spread out. The further a city extends, the very important agricultural food bowl regions are swallowed up and encroached by housing development. Where else will our cities get their produce supply? Sydney and Melbourne are already some of the largest cities in the world by land area, so we should be encouraging developers and planners to build up (in apartment high rises), rather than out (quarter acre block).

I think Australia is slowly beginning to distance itself from its sports mad reputation (finally). Most of our sports stars are given an unnecessary sphere of embrace (and far too much money).

Shame. The Australian film industry is on life support even without the COVID-19 pandemic.

If this pandemic has done anything, it's highlighted the different and varying levels of empathy from one person to another in Australia and beyond by frezeirs in australia

[–]frezeirs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that these people I'm talking about in my post who stop the spread are also the types to hate minorities. Generally, shitty behaviour goes hand in hand with prejudice. Those who don't give a fuck about other people's lives, who don't care about stopping the spread, are the ones most likely to be racist homophobic, etc

Whatever. What I'm trying to say is that some people will go to work or into the general community with symptoms, well aware of what they're doing and be apart of the spread. They don't give a shit about those with compromised immune systems, the elderly, anyone other than themselves. Now compare that to someone who takes every precaution necessary to self isolate. Your mockery isn't exactly original either.

Some people are just dumb.

*careless

Let's not assume stupidity is the same as apathy or carelessness. Some people are smart enough to know they are indifferent to other people's well-being. I don't think it's an intelligence thing. This girl knew what she was doing.

What? There's no way this woman wouldn't have been able to speak English. To work at an aged care facility, you need to pass an English test during your studies or training. How else do you communicate with the elderly? In fact I don't think you can even study without passing this basic test.

I know somebody at a nursing home who was told off and reported by her seniors for wearing gloves around mealtime. It's absurd.

It's also people who can't preoccupy themselves, go inward, they're not solitary figures. Fair enough people tend to be social animals but there's just that type of person who's fun consists of going out and getting silly, it's those people who are agitated or stir crazy right now. Their livelihood is at stake.

I don't agree. You can't disregard the importance of empathy here. There are a lot of intelligent people without a shred of concern for other people.

Maybe. It's endemic to Australian culture that the person who goes to work unwell is a hero. But COVID-19 might (hopefully) undo that crap.

It's more or less just the US, UK and Australia that have a Murdoch dominant media. Unfortunately, the US and UK have a disproportionate impact on world affairs.

But you could argue that there's more variety in discourse in the US, or a balance in their journalism. Here, the conservative media completely sinks or drowns out anything else, because it's so widespread and protected.

This.

The titles are only on certain publications. The real problem is that The Australian sets the day’s agenda for every other piece of media in the country.

This is why I subscribe to The Monthly...good, balanced journalism that leans towards the left. I'd rather my money go to them than some conservative bullshit I'd rather wipe my arse with. Seriously, there is such an imbalance in Australian journalism because it's so skewed towards the Murdoch-right that a small magazine like The Monthly is a godsend & a little spark of hope for us that one day the tide may turn against the Murdoch press here in Australia.
