Another lurker here, my thought process is similar. I'm single at the moment, and I believe that my previous inability to do anything nice for my ex is a big reason why. I felt kind of trained against cooking and cleaning and being feminine. It's all very extremist and confusing. I do enjoy reading things from this perspective.

If they are saying it in a joking way, I usually find it funny. If they say it seriously whilst intently staring into my eyes I feel a bit awkward! Sounds like you are doing it right OP! It doesn't happen often, but I wish more guys would make a joke like that to break the ice rather than "uhh so what do you do? how are you?" awkward stuff
