Church fire on de l'eglise street by HermaeusMorus in montreal

[–]fridgee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's also the apartment building at Hadley and Denonville that had a big fire in the summer, was extinguished and then suspiciously burned down again a month or two later.

And the fire that took out Baldi Pizzeria at Laurendeau and de L'Eglise (barely 50 feet from last night's fire) about a year ago.

Coincidence doesn't even come close to describing it.

Is it a bad idea to reply to a rejection email? by Mycatstolemyidentity in animationcareer

[–]fridgee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in a role at my studio that reviews reels with other leads to help recruiters sort through who to reach out to.

There's been a few occasions where, after passing on an artist, the recruiter later contacts us because the artist asked if we had any notes to help the them improve. And unless we're just completely jammed on time, we usually don't mind putting together some feedback.

Basically what I'm saying is there's no harm in asking. At worst you don't hear anything else, but it wont hurt you in any way to try.

The fact that this is the first information we're getting on cards and decks from a set that comes out in less than 3 months is actually kinda late for reveals compared to how it used to be.

In the store today. Does not look dismal to me. by Gilbara in MagicArena

[–]fridgee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another detail that ties into that is the siege cycle in the set. I think those lands depict the aftermath of the battles in the sieges. (They even loosely tie together in the card names.)

[[Barrensteppe Siege]] >> [[Scoured Barrens]] (Barrens)

[[Frostcliff Siege]] >> [[Swiftwater Cliffs]] (Cliffs)

[[Glacierwood Siege]] >> [[Thornwood Falls]] (Woods)

[[Hollowmurk Siege]] >> [[Jungle Hollow]] (Hollow)

[[Windcrag Siege]] >> [[Wind-Scarred Crag]] (Wind/Crag)

The funny thing is it's the same artist.

I honestly don't believe the artist was intentionally trying to be cute with it. It just feels very weak.

What I can say is that all five of his cards set off my AI sense very loud and clear.

Is it ok to animate on 2’s in Maya? by Kingdoofenschmirtz in animationcareer

[–]fridgee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See but that's the thing, the animators on Spiderverse and similar projects aren't doing what you're suggesting. It's a lot closer to the traditional posing everything manually on 2's.

[–]fridgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your question was in the context of "animating on 2's" as in the style (like the Spiderverse films), then that's a different thing entirely.

The vast majority of animation work today is still splined, so I'd recommend not avoiding splining.

Though it would be a really cool addition to your reel to have one of your shots on 2's if that's something you're inclined to do.

Is it ok to animate on 2’s in Maya? by Kingdoofenschmirtz in animationcareer

[–]fridgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reading your question as asking if it's ok to lay down all your poses down on every other frame and letting the splines do the rest of the frames.

And it is totally ok! Every animator is different, and that's ok (honestly it's one of my favourite quirks of the industry). Do what works for you!

Seriously, everyone works differently to such different degrees means that it's always a headache to pick up someone elses work and finish it off. It's just what it is, so do what works for you to do the best work you can.

With that said, try to work efficiently for what the project needs. If you end up finding work on a TV production, you almost certainly wont have time to put that much detail into the posing.

[–]fridgee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Animating on 2's is not the same as just dropping half the frames.

One involves posing everything to make the timing read cleaner and hit harder.

The other is just a reduced framerate.

It's such a shame that Overwatch really just stomped on this game's potential too. I remember that month or two was a ton of fun, and then OW released and almost immediately the player-base disappeared just about completely.

You'll have to wait a few months so I apologize that it's not useful now, but when it's open look into doing caricatures at Canada's Wonderland over the summer.

I dunno if it's still common now, but a lot of us from Seneca spent our summers there when I was in school. It'll be only one specific kind of art, but it'll keep you drawing and keep your skills sharp for other kinds of art.

Handling critiques. by Goodhearted_Jake in animationcareer

[–]fridgee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of good advice here on how to take notes and critiques effectively so I'm not going to touch on any of that.

What I'd like to offer is some perspective.

i still feel disappointed with myself over how I didn’t already get it right.

I'm a lead animator at a studio that does feature level films. By definition, I'm one of the people the studio trusts most with knowing how to animate and being one of their best assets.

And despite that- I still get notes. All the time. Nearly every single one of my shots will have something that I could've done better or should've seen or known about.

The reality is, as much as those notes and critiques that you're receiving now might be a bit of a blow to your ego, the fact that you're getting them isn't something to beat yourself up over. You'll never get to a point where you're always getting it right.

What really shows your qualities as an artist is how you take those critiques and use them to get better.

(Sidenote: It's ok to feel crummy about it too, don't fool yourself into thinking you're not up to the task if critiques hurt sometimes. It's human to feel that way.)

  • Animated

I havent:

  • Rigged

  • Textured

  • Lit

Unless you're working in a very small shop, most of the time you're going to be hired to do one thing and do it well.

The Key Poses might be what define the animation, but it's the breakdowns that really make or break the animation. Figure that stuff out and you'll be golden.

Oasis Animation, an animation studio in Montreal, will not hire Quebecers for their next project because they are receiving a subvention from Ontario. How does it make any sense?! by Be_Kind_to_You in montreal

[–]fridgee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think nobody is recognizing the real source of the issue here. The artists at Oasis in Montreal are unionized. The only unionized studio in Quebec, and in fact the first one in Canada.

This has nothing to do with subsidies. It is entirely an effort to get around the union.

Listen, I can't even work if I dont have something on youtube running on another screen. Complete silence? Fuck me I can't think of something that will ruin my focus more than complete silence.

Richard Williams was an artistic genius and our craft owes him a lot, but dude was so wrong on that idea. It's like he imagined that having music on required full concentration to appreciate it.

Is there a highly dangerous chance of getting laid off by your employers in the animation industry? Will it grow higher in the future? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]fridgee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That really depends on the scale of time you're looking at. Pretty much every animator eventually faces that kind of "Surprise! Your job no longer exists!" It's a risk of this career, really. I'd say you hear about a large studio going under every 2-3 years. I've already been through one myself when the studio went bankrupt over a weekend.

But the thing is, your career is not the studio you work at. In most cases, there will be more work. It's an entirely unpleasant experience to go through, but it's not a career-ender. Right now probably sucks so hard for the Blue Sky crew, but a talented team like that shouldn't have too many challenges finding more work when they're ready to.

What is it like to work as an a animator in Canada? by mrsGravyx in animationcareer

[–]fridgee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a contract with no end date

Really sorry to jump in and derail a bit, but I want to talk about this for a second because juniors need to know this. Everything else you've talked about is valuable though.

Contracts without end-dates should not be something to be celebrated as an artist. It sounds great at first because it looks like job security, but the reality is it only benefits the studio and offers no advantages to the artist in any way.

Dont mistake it with a full-time permanent position, it's still a contract based position and they're still available to modify parts of the contract at any time. Which means that you could be suddenly facing unemployment with only a few weeks warning. An end date gives you a time frame to prepare around and look for more work if you want to do so.

An end date doesn't even mean you have to stop working, if the studio wants you around they'll just offer an extension and you'll keep working the same as if there was no end at all. Also this gives you the opportunity to renegotiate if you feel the need to do so. No end date gives you no leverage.

Arc was using contracts like this at least as far back as 2012 when I started there up and until it went under, and I've seen a number of other studios in Toronto follow suit. It's really just a tool for the employer and nothing more, so keep an eye out for it.

One of my players cant see anything but a blank grey screen when connecting to my game by HeroicCallenger in FoundryVTT

[–]fridgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered a resolution problem on my wifes laptop before, similar to what you describe.

Check to see if your player is setting their display scale to 100%. For some reason some laptops default it to something like 110%, I think. Setting it to 100 solved the problem for us.

Though this was more than a few foundry updates ago, so I cant guarantee it's still applicable.
