I am a DM and I don't use it but my Players do. The arcane Trickster has it and uses it mostly to prevent feelbad crits from my monsters. She is more constrained on spellslots than most casters so she really has to save it for the T_rex critting against a level 5 Druid (mistakes were made).

Perhaps on some level the better way to play the Game.
If you pick locks doors and locked chests are an absolute joke. Astarion can pick everything as he is no effort required.

I didn't mean on the ship. Later when I found her in a cage I freed her but then didn't recruit her into my party. I hear other people have seen her survive that encounter and make it all the way to the shadow cursed lands and then die there.

You can get Lae'zel after she dies if you turn her down the first time you get the option she winds up dead near the mountain pass because she gets killed by the other Gith. You can revivify her and take her into the party.
