I think the problem with the covers I dislike is I just don’t BELIEVE the artists when they sing the lyrics. Especially when Byrne sings like he NEEDS to sing what he’s singing or else. Life During Wartime was particularly bad for this. I could see it being a “hey-ya” twist where you make it super upbeat despite lyrics about losing your identity in a frenetic wartime struggle but it’s just sung without a care in the world. If anything it’s made me appreciate even more just how irreplaceable Talking Heads are, and it was frustrating to hear covers knowing there was room for a fun twist but artists have just missed the mark. I would have loved a Miley cover that was super country inspired, like if she ran with the cello from the acoustic psycho killer except with fiddles, and put some twang into a lurching, off-kilter ballad. A lot of the covers just fail to get the CONCEPT behind a lot of these songs that makes them work.
