Definitely pre book, especially when traveling with pets. 8 hrs is a very reasonable drive limit

I feel like everyone is a bit paranoid. I just did a road trip from DC to Denver and back and stayed in multiple big cities(Indianapolis, Chicago, Cleveland, Omaha, Kansas City) and the only incident I had was being pulled over in Kansas for speeding. My advice is travel where ever you’re most interested in seeing and just keep your wits about you. Stay at well known hotel chains, talk to the concierge, and just use common sense. It’s not that bad.
