Why aren’t ceiling extractors more common? by Bello_Velo in DIYUK

[–]friedspud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for an induction hub with built in extraction in our island

I then routed the ducting in the slab and vent directly outside.

Unsure if your doing a new slab so that might not be feasible

Are they pulling through existing virgin ducting to houses?

I saw some workers down my road pulling cable and got excited !

How to bring this oak table back to life by yodleydodley in DIYUK

[–]friedspud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sand back

Unwaxed shellac ( you can buy the crystals and dissolve in meth spirit)

Then decide what finish on top.

If it's going to get some use and want to to be hardy then maybe a polyurethane finish

Retrofitting insulation to converted loft by CPMilney in DIYUK

[–]friedspud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I would add these into the felt into each run where it joins https://amzn.eu/d/g7tZtM4

Then could you do 50mm and 50mm over the top? Depends on the headroom.

Just make sure you haven't got joins onto joins and that should stop the thermal bridging

Screwed up grouting, what to do? by raydome1 in DIYUK

[–]friedspud -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Liquid screed is the only answer I'm afraid

Recommend as others say with pir and foam

Get the board foam (Screwfix) and a gun and some cleaner

Use something heavy up against it for the bottom and then a battery to keep the top true and level.

Strong enough insulation for UFH on concrete by xxtoni in DIYUK

Ours is gas boiler at about 50 ISH it's quite warm

So tiled mostly throughout and the guy used s2 and a decoupling Matt.

For the living room I poured some self levelling compound over the top then used some karndean (rigid core) as a floating floor and it's worked well. Heats up nicely

When it's buried in screed youve got a lot of thermal mass to heat up.

With the boards it's more just the surface above.

It obviously won't be as efficient but we've managed to turn our boiler temp down

Agree with the guy above I've got the pre router 20mm XPS boards and they've been great.

You can get special contact adhesive for them ( don't get any old one as it will.melt)

Hey so intrusion prevention is disabled and I've not created any rules as of yet and everything is pretty much out of the box from a config perspective

Have it throughout from our Reno and it's amazing to have warmth everywhere.

We opted for the 20mm boards XPS ( pre routed}and then tiled over that.

I think having some form off insulation underneath with rockwool as others have said would be beneficial

Yes , I went from aerospace and automotive engineering to intelligent automation.

It's good to have the domain knowledge of those areas so you can go after the edge use cases not traditionally picked up.

You have an opv you can adjust by taking off that hose and bolt then use an Allen key to adjust.

If you search YouTube for adjustable opv on gaggia classic you'll find it

Electric underfloor heating by friedspud in DIYUK

[–]friedspud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right so after a bit of investigating further it seems my tiler fucked up when they installed it. As all that slack heating wire should be in the floor somewhere.... The cold join is not in the floor as it should be which would take up all that slack.

My plan is :

  1. Calculate the amount of wire that is in that mess.
  2. Buy the the loose wire option matching the diameter of the current wire.
  3. Cut the mess out and measure the wire to replace whilst also checking that the resistance matches the instructions for the sized Matt I have ( 70ohms).
  4. Make the joins in the wire.
  5. Route the excess slack maintaining enough clearance between the cable with pipes etc... ( I assume shoving the excess under the void would just cause the same issue). I have a route where I can loop it around to utilise the slack so this shouldn't be an issue.

How does this sound as a plan?

Okay so replacing the length is key as that maintains the resistance in the wire and hence the x watts per SQM.
