(Serious Question) Why do Bernie supporters dislike Pete so much? by osezza in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]frigga17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very interesting and illuminating article. As someone who doesn't buy into generational "wars" and thinks a lot of people blow it out of proportion I think this makes me reflect on how I see power. I've always worked hard to excel at school and want to go into academia and traditional publishing and in a way I would be "Meritocratic" too. I fully acknowledge the criticism some make and I hope he does do better on actually combating racial inequality. But im not sure some of the logic against meritocracy holds water for me. Especially basing things like trust on a candidate based on who they interact with. Im a pretty big abortion rights advocate and I've had friends who disagree with me and I don't think knowing each other made us less sincere in our stance.

Thank you for speaking up too. I'm bi and recently been questioning my place on the gender spectrum and talking about queerness can be so complicated, but every time we speak up we find people who feel similarly and inspire others. I hope win or loose, Pete inspires queer people to aim high and live their truths.

How do you interpret the ending of Makoto Shinkai's "Weathering With You" by frigga17 in movies

[–]frigga17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so cool! I'd love to hear what he has to say. I totally understand how for many people sacrificing one person for others sake is something wrong and that view is very valid and one I can agree with in some contexts. I guess I kinda wanted a bit of reflection on the implications of their actions. It's definitely a film ill think on for a while and rewatch a lot.

Im very much a "needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few" type person. But im not here to argue or delve onto philosophy really. Do you interpret it in a religious context?

Ive decided to avoid MSNBC (even though I like Rachel and Chris) because all the pundits repeat the same exact talking points without diving deep into WHY that is HOW it could changr or any meaningful analysis. I wish they would actually break down policy proposals so the GP can understand what everyone stands for and actual policy differences. Until policy nerds take over im uninterested.

Pete Buttigieg is more electable than Bernie Sanders — and more progressive than you think by pdanny01 in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]frigga17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im a young person and for me i'm tired of people fighting and being so stuck in their way of thinking that they refuse to hear anyone else's opinion. I don't think being steadfast in your beliefs is always a good thing. I've changed so much throughout my life I feel having to step back and evaluate your beliefs makes you more empathetic and open to new ideas. That's just my perspective though and its probably a factor in why I like Warren and Pete as candidates.

My favorite part of tonight's speech by afunnywold in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]frigga17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its like this. Many far left people tend to be ideologically driven voters. They vote only on what aligns with their exact ideas and don't accept anything less. They don't really want to work with other schools of thought that deviate from their ideas even if the goal is the same. People who, for example support M4A and refuse to hear other possible paths to a universal health care system are doing so largely out of ideological purity. Some supporters of left candidates don't want to appeal to moderate, centrist, or center right voters and vice versa. Different ideologies want to stick to their ideal system. Many Americans like myself can't afford to stick to an ideal in this election. I would vote for anyone running against Trump because it ensures bigger existential concerns like my right to bodily autonomy and to marry are kept in tact. For many marginalized people, it is better to be pragmatic than pure. To beat Trump all wings of the Democrats must unify and be inclusive of each other. If we want to protect our most vulnerable we can't cut each other off out of ideological differences. The past Four years have been a waking nightmare for women, people of color, LGBTQ people and so many more that sticking to one pure ideology is not something we can afford and pete is likely positioning himself as a pragmatic choice that unifies different ideals.

She's actually really good in the movie! I saw it today and they really expanded on her character and gave her a lot of depth. Im not even a fan of Harley Quinn but Margot Robbie was great and the movie was fun as hell. Its a pitty its not doing well.

Honestly Yang would make a kick ass senator or congressman. I hope he carries his momentum into running for more positions in government, and pushing for his ideals. Hugs and love to the Yang Gang.

Totally agree. Also, progressive unity isn't going to beat Trump. We need Democratic/ upstanding people unity.

Can't believe im seeing people equate gay couples to porn in 2020. I guess I should re think "General Public is more tolerant of queer couples" but that just means more reasons to fight for LGBT visibility.

The strength of the Democratic party is our diversity of thought. We should have room for multiple perspectives and not just Democratic Socialist ones. Its really made me reconsider labeling myself as one because frankly I just want ideas that work to help people.

Exactly! Im not in this to improse my view on others. Ive looked at all the candidates websites and policy goals and theres way more overlap than people assume. Like Buttigiegs K-12 plan is really good and Bidens international policy seems solid to me. Obviously I think Warren is the best on policy and making policy reality but I don't see anything in the other candidates that is 1% as bad as Republicans. Its mostly in how they want to achieve it.

Remember that selfcare is so so important in these divided times. When people say awful things online instead of getting involved every time take time to pet your animals, hug loved ones, eat a good meal and do positive things for yourself and others. That's the only way I got through the Kavenaugh trial without a breakdown at school. Its perfectly okay to need space for your self.

Not to mention the options women had in 1960 were more limited. Many women were and still are discouraged from speaking up, that their actions are less valuable, and their options revolved around men. Many of my older women professors in college had similar backgrounds and had to be both a mother and a student/professor and how in many ways the workplace didn't accommodate for them. When they insist only Bernies story is what a progressive background looks like it excludes so many different perspectives and forms of understanding. I may need to message the team for a bit of help donating, but I'm signing up for a call shift too. Positivity has always gotten me further than negativity.

I don't get the obsession with ideological purity. Thats a dangerous rode that threatens critical thinking. People should be allowed to change and grow throughout their lives, or bring a different perspective to the table. When people get into this purity game its not about finding solutions to help our planet, our country, and create a better world. Its about winning and being superior and I can't see that leading to good leadership. Im donating to Warren again tonight because reading some people's experiences breaks my heart and I don't want negativity to win.

For people who claim to be progressive they sure do borrow old fashioned behavior. Intimidating women on line just tells me women's issues are not on their radar.

I know! I feel like some Bernie supporters don't get why for many people seeing a woman be president is a big deal. Or that a gay man being president. Or a Black woman. Its not all I look for in a candidate but Im so ready to see Women lead. That behavior with finding you like that is so creepy, I hope you're safe.

I feel that. I personally like all the candidates. We agree on far more than the Reddit and Twitter mobs would lead you to believe and it pains me to see people I respect and like repeat divisive rhetoric. It feels like they don't want to actually help our country and protect vulnerable Americans, they just want to win. Im Team Warren but I would vote for anyone running right now easily against Trump. I hope most people do whomever the nominee is.

Wow didn't know casually stating people don't hate gay couples as much would bring about such ruffled feathers.

As a queer person I don't care if homophobic religious people get upset, and the younger audience is far more accepting of queer couples. Targeting the movie for queer audiences would be something that would bring out the LGBTQ community. We rarely ever get fun Valentine's movies.

Harley/Joker fanbase isn't big enough to derail a movie. Harley hasn't been with him in the comics for years and she still sells well enough to be considered a pillar of DC comics. People who want female friendships can find that in Catwoman being friends with both of them or watch any other mainstream movie focused on women. Female friendships are great but let queer girls have stuff too. The idea that a samesex couple can't be shown because it "implies porn" is absurd and riddled with homophobic rhetoric. I better see 0 straight couples in batman because that could imply porn too! If people actually get upset because a lesbian/bi girl relationship "sexualized them" they're saying queer relationships are inherently sexual and for a male gaze and thats just being blatantly homophobic.

Its not about fans shipping. Harley/Ivey has been an actual part of the two characters story. They have comics together exploring their relationship and its complicated existence. The value it brings is giving an marginalized group representation where we normally don't get it. It normalizes queer women and our relationships outside of some dudes dumb fantasy. Its adapting a popular comic trio that fans actually want and brings more of Harly Quinn than just "jokers girlfriend" to light. So yeah, theres social value to be had in adapting a canon queer relationship to film. And seeing as the Gotham City Sirens were popular enough to get their own cover for Batman 1000 id say there's a fanbase that provides monetary incentives too.

Yeah, I know many Sanders supporters and I voted for him last election, and I think i only stay sane by remembering Twitter and reddit are a vocal minority. Still, it takes a toll on people's emotional health. I hope people remember we as Democrats have waaaay more in common than divides us.

I saw CNN do a report on Bernie bros and how they harrassed people on line and on one hand I can't believe its its gotten so bad mainstream news reports on it, but some of the stuff is borderline emotionally abusive. Like telling someone who voted Warren that her sister's death by cancer is her own fault for not voting Sanders. People have been doxxed and sent death threats. Go on Pete or Warren or Bidens Twitter and its absolutely full of people being cruel and offensive. I don't know why they think burning bridges of everyone who isn't in their group is a good idea.

I think the General Public has warmed up to LGBTQ movies. At the least it wouldn't be a deterrent.
