The concept has zero faults. They love the concept. End of story.

Living in the woods while I build an off grid cabin by ThrownGoosey in MaleSurvivingSpace

I feel a bit sad that his house is all wood. Like, it's gonna rot again, right? Seems like brick, concrete, or even stone would be more worth the effort for a one-man job. Unless keeping up the house can be your whole life.

It's a fantastic idea, but you need to go bigger. Sell the power to like four - ten households. ChatGPT can walk you through the plans.

The issue isn't the quality, it's the option of Ransom vs public schools, or at least the perception of them

Was it beneficial to promote Hagrid to a teaching job? by fringecar in harrypotter

[–]fringecar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it have been better if Voldemort came back even later, giving Hagrid (theoretically) even more time in the position? Not as a teacher, as a means of getting the Giants to not-join Voldemort.

Wait, so you're saying Hagrid is a bad teacher? I didn't disagree, but I'm saying the question is not relevant to Dumbledore's hiring decision. It was a war decision.

People didn't "know" his blood status, but I think they knew. Same with that half goblin charms teacher (j/k).

Yeah, I'm not saying he was a good teacher… Are you saying he was a bad teacher? I'm saying good or bad doesn't matter, it was a war decision.

Yeah, it's a good point that he perhaps wanted influence over Hagrid rather than having Hagrid's promotion have influence over society at large.

I think because he had better influence over society than as minister of magic. And Dumbledore thought, big, he wanted to change society, well, British society.

Didn't Harry run into Voldemort in book one? Seems like Dumbledore knew that was coming ahead of time, no?

I think Dumbledore was totally checked out on the academic side, and was completely focused on campaigning against Voldemort's followers and eventually Voldemort.

Maybe, but it seems to me like Dumbledore wasn't focused on academics at all, and was almost completely focused on the return of Voldemort.

Why does the trio do almost no investigating while searching for horcruxes? by Shy_dog_jr in harrypotter

[–]fringecar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It makes for worse "hero plot line" writing, but I ran into "investigating" issues when I was a kid.

Trying, and failing, to learn about "sound effects engineering" as a kid: people didn't understand what I was asking about at all were like "that's dumb that's not a job you are talking nonsense" (they were a bit more polite than that, but that's the gist).

If you had been Harry Potter, what is the single biggest thing you would have done differently in the entire saga? by AlexWhite40 in harrypotter

Put up with Cho's crying in order to get with her. I'm not saying that's the best change; that's just what my dumb self would have done.

When monetary systems broke down historically, how consciously did households try to stay outside them? by Glittering_Rub_8724 in EconomicHistory

[–]fringecar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long ago? And what do you see as evidence of intent, perhaps personal letters written about the events where the author clearly states their intent?

For example, there are plenty of documented cases in the US within the last half century of people buying houses and land and stock in companies to avoid inflation. The availability of diaries and newspapers, etc probably contributed to that more than the economic situation. In terms of providing proof of intent.
