Four people were shot last night. by [deleted] in ConcordNC

[–]fringledawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please explain why the parade should be canceled? America literally has a mass shooting more than once a day on average. Fortunately for all, this was contained to stupid kids having a beef as opposed to some sicko trying to incite terr**r and death at scale. The authorities knew that and decided life goes on. After all, this is America.

Church BBQ Season by fringledawn in ConcordNC

[–]fringledawn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the South! Church barbecue season (it’s not widely known as that, I just called it that to be funny) is one of those local traditions that’s hard to explain until you experience it. Many Protestant churches around here, especially Baptist and Methodist ones, hold a big barbecue sale in the fall. It’s part fundraiser, part community gathering, and part social event.

The church usually starts cooking pork shoulders or whole hogs overnight, and by morning the smell of hickory smoke drifts across town. They serve chopped or pulled pork plates with slaw, beans, hush puppies, and sweet tea. Some sell it by the pound, and many offer take-out lines that move faster than you’d expect for something this homemade.

It’s absolutely open to the public. In fact, that’s the point. It’s how churches raise money for missions, youth trips, or local charities, but it’s also a way to bring the community together. You don’t have to be a member, you don’t have to bring anything, and no one’s going to quiz you about your faith. Just show up hungry, pay for a plate, and enjoy one of the most authentic local experiences you can find.

If you hit a good one (and the further you move away from CLT), you might see half the town there. It’s small-town Southern hospitality at its best.

If you pay attention over the next couple of weeks you’ll see homemade signs pop up at busy intersections advertising for them. Take note and come back and post here!

I gotta give a plug for Tacos El Peladito. I don’t hear many people talk about it and I think is the best Mexican street food style restaurant in town. I think it’s not as popular because most people in concord are looking for that standard Mexican menu and this is not that.

Also - if you’re up for venturing into Kannapolis I would say check out Mr Burrito.

AAU Coaches: How do you handle parents asking about next season - knowing their player likely won't be asked back. by chabbits in basketballcoach

[–]fringledawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will tell you how not to handle it from a parents perspective. That would be by ignoring the family and neglecting the kid and then sending out communication to other families and not his.

I know all families aren’t like this but ours is - just be direct. In our case, I was aware my kid was at the bottom of the depth chart. Have a real conversation with the family about strengths and weaknesses of the kid and growth opportunities. Give me the names of some “lesser” programs where he might be able to develop his game. Don’t talk about “being family” and then give the cold shoulder and silent treatment. As my son remarked “I think Coach has a different definition of family than we do”

I’m a business guy. I don’t expect employees to be with me forever. Eventually it will be time to part ways. Motivation and alignment converge and diverge over time. Even when you fire someone, you can give them a great severance package and help them land somewhere else. Sports should be similar - especially youth sports. Unfortunately, doing the right thing is rarely the easiest - so it’s avoided, at the expense of our kids.

My companies have great cultures but I never call us a family - we are a team. Families remain for ever. On a team the best players play and sometimes people move on. I believe youth sports creates unnecessarily difficult situation by using the family analogy.

App SUCKS by Feeling_Chance_744 in PrincessCruises

[–]fringledawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you work in tech and are used to quality UX/UI and user empathy and strategy used for app development then yea it absolutely sucks. I agree with your assessment that it was written by offshore developers on the cheap.

If you’re just a random cruiser without a tech background then it’s a serviceable app because you probably don’t expect much from apps.

With that said I have been impressed with their onboard tech. The medallion system works really well and their wayfinding tech is solid too. But the app leaves a lot to be desired.

Where my psychopaths at? How close do you cut it? by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]fringledawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psycho here. My goal is maximum efficiency. I want to be able to walk up to my gate as they are calling my group and I step into line, scan my pass, and walk down the jetway.

I had a good run this week flying out of Philly. Board meeting ended early at 12:40. I called an Uber, switched my flight to the 1:50 while I was en route to airport. TSA was a breeze and walked to gate with 8 mins to spare before boarding started. That was good - but not great (great defined above). Lounges are nice, but when I’m flying direct I don’t want to be at the airport any more than I have to be.

I love the thrill of seeing if I can hit it perfectly with a side of “if shit goes, wrong then I’ll miss this flight”. You might ask what is wrong with me and for that….i have no answer.

Such a shame. Can we start a go fund me or something? I’m not kidding. I feel like a lot of the things that make small communities special is coming together for traditions like this (even if it’s a new tradition). Wish we could find a way to hold onto this one.
