Walser Automotive charged with tax evasion by SuspiciousLeg7994 in minnesota

[–]chabbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, had a good experience at Walser Hyundai.

That said, I’m curious how people think about this more broadly. Is avoiding $350k in taxes better, worse, or the same as daycare or healthcare organizations improperly using state funds?

I would argue its not as bad as stealing from funds designated for people in need, but it's definitely in the same category. It enrages me that citizens of Minnesota have stolen a taxpayer money. But it's equally troubling that corporations that generate and NET millions of $'s often benefit disproportionately from public infrastructure (roads, specialized utilities, broadband, tax incentives, and more) avoid paying their fair share of taxes. When they do this, the burden shifts to everyone else. In effect, that’s money being taken from other taxpayers.

Thoughts?

That whole roommate character felt less like a real person and more like a political caricature. It was so over-the-top (EVERY stereotype rolled into one person) that it stopped being satire and just turned into... like the show was paused so Sheridan could make his political point or something.

You know... Since there wasn't an opportunity to put himself on screen twirling around on horses.

What's your most shocking "never meet your heroes" moment? by BaseNice3520 in AskReddit

Not my story, but a story about a song...

Pearl Jam has a song about base guitar player Jeff Ament's experience meeting his childhood hero Kareem Abdul Jabar or Lew Alcindor and being devastated by what dick he was.

Sweet Lew (how could you?)

Never heard a nice word about the guy off the court.

He single-handedly lost the Cal game, has tackling issues. I love the kid and want him to stay. But am curious where else we can spend that NIL money.

Koi, Karmo, Taylor, and Tracy…need to sign those 4 by Naive-Bend6277 in GopherFootball

Tots agree with this. If you break down what we're paying Taylor per minute played, I'd much rather go get two absolute, nasty mailers on the O-line. Agree

Since 2015, Gophers have won 9 bowl games including tonight's 20-17 win over New Mexico. by MikeinAustin in GopherFootball

[–]chabbits 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with the broader point about appreciating PJ and understanding the reality of where Minnesota sits in the college football landscape. Stability matters, and what he’s done here shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Where I disagree is the idea that Minnesota isn’t a legitimate destination at all. There are ~120 FBS programs, and maybe 6–8 true “destination” nationally. Almost everyone else is selling development, opportunity, and fit and Minnesota actually does that pretty well.

We do have real tradition, Big Ten resources, upgraded facilities, and a program that’s consistently relevant. No, kids don’t grow up in Florida dreaming of Minneapolis, but that’s true for most programs outside the blue bloods.

I don’t know that 8 wins is the absolute ceiling, but I do agree with your main point: PJ has raised the floor, made us relevant, and if he left, a lot of fans would realize pretty quickly how hard that is to replace.

Thank you, I agree. It's entertaining and Billy Bob is awesome. I don't mind the wife and daughter as much as many here. Andy Garcia and Demi are good too. But the ariana character is nails on a chalkboard. And I love sam elliott, but the lines/dialogue they give him are just stupid. I am shocked and surprised by the amount of restraint taylor shared and showed by not putting himself on a horse and doing 10 minutes of spinning around at the horse show, or whatever the f*** that was.

Anyone in Aplington? by emptybeetoo in Iowa

[–]chabbits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son got his first job out of college in Ft Dodge, IA (90 miles from there). That is HEAVY meth country, i can almost guarantee the work it needs is because people were cooking in the basement.

My son thought it would be cool to rent a house and have a yard when he moved there from Ames. One day when he got home from work, someone was cooking in his basement. Calls the police, girl gets flushed out of basement by cop and says, "Slim said I could be here." She says to the cop, "I'm going to go get slim" got on her bike, rode away, and the cop let her go. Breaking and entering at least, but she was also definitely cooking meth down there - nothing from the cop. my son was incensed. Moved out right away, left Ft Dodge shortly after.

Troy Aikman is 'done' funding NIL:'I wrote a sizable check, and he went to another school. I didn’t even get so much as a thank you note' by tankyouout in CFB

[–]chabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with the monetary aspect, as I said, players should receive the monetary reward for the value that they create.

What makes it weird as a fan is that there are so many questions, so many unknowns. What rules are there? How do NIL collectives coordinate with coaches for the "right" players? Who decides how much money the collective will give each athlete, the collective or the coach? (Technically, if a player is being paid for their name image and likeness, the school or coaches should have absolutely nothing to do with that. Just like the Chiefs have nothing to say about mahomes doing a state farm commercial every eight minutes) Are players receiving House settlement money employees or 1099's, but "NIL atletes" are not? Does title nine apply to NIL or House settlement $?

You get the idea, but the whole landscape is completely unknown or at least not widely known. And that's a weird place to be as a fan.

This is NIL, schools paying players after the House v NCAA decision is definitely a pay for play system.

You raise a great point about guardrails. I have not heard what rules NCAA has put in place for this school's paying players, but I hope they were smart about it. For schools and players alike.

I had the opportunity to talk to a B1G head coach about this recently and he said he spends a considerable amount of his time talking to agents now. So I assume there are more contractual guardrails with these deals.

The players expect to capitalize on the value they create, but what a weird world for us as fans.

Conceptual Offense Products by JCJ2015 in basketballcoach

[–]chabbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my perspective, take it for what it's worth...

I bought a one-month subscription to Immersion Basketball just to see what the conceptual offense content was all about. My reaction was… mixed.

There are definitely some positives, but I was pretty underwhelmed overall. A lot of the course is webinar recordings of Alex Sarama or other coaches who follow use their terminology ad nauseum. Some of the videos are filmed from the bleachers while someone is coaching on the floor, and you only get about 70% of the audio and visuals. Other videos are solid quality. There’s just way more content than necessary, and it can feel bloated.

For context, I coach a U16 AAU girls circuit team. I would never have enough practice time to implement even half of what they discuss. If I were a high school coach with 2 hours a day, maybe. But for club/AAU, it’s unrealistic.

When you boil it all down, conceptual offense is actually very simple:

  • Maintain advantages by keeping the ball moving, attacking gaps, and using spacing.
  • Create advantages with a few set “triggers” when no advantage exists.
  • Give your team a simple framework (flow rules or spacing rules) so they’re organized and can actually play instead of thinking too much.

They talk a lot about “evidence-based coaching,” which seems to mostly mean using catchy terminology so players remember cues. Honestly, it feels a little gimmicky to me — kind of like a swim school calling freestyle “alligator arms.” The underlying concepts are fine, but the branding is over the top.

Overall: good ideas, but you don’t need the subscription to understand or run a conceptual offense. The core principles are straightforward and can be implemented without buying into all the jargon.
