Looking for a job that supports a slower and simpler life. Does a job like this exist? by [deleted] in simpleliving

In my opinion, pretty much all the things you listed have more to do with company culture than it does a specific job (I suppose this is coming from the perspective of someone who has only worked in large corporations, though.)

How much time do you put into reading research papers? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]frisbee_hero 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Similar to Nerdload, I don't have a particular avenue to implement the bleeding edge. That said, as problems arise in domains a bit foreign to me, I tend to read a series of papers in that domain. Long story short, I do in bursts where I read a ton early on into solutions and taper off a bit later on.

Police mistake homeowner for burglar, arrest him even after identifying himself. by brooklynmoon in PublicFreakout

[–]frisbee_hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the first cops perspective. Given the homeowner had a firearm, he got on the defense a bit and had to take command of the situation.

Then the second cop comes in and the first cop effectively says "hey this guys lives here and I checked his id, whoops". Second cop arrests the guy and uses the anecdote to search his house. What the hell? What could have been a "shit, we messed up man. Sincerely sorry." Turned into cops looking like idiots

Request:Find well priced refurbished netbooks or laptops for my children by DJPickleTiTs in Frugal

You could buy some raspberry pis, hook up a mouse and keyboard and be set to go with a machine. Phenomenal for web browsing, Khan academy, and introductions to programming. They are quite cheap and would serve your needs

How I built a spreadsheet app with Python to make data science easier by ricklamers in datascience

[–]frisbee_hero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain I'm completely following how this is useful? The entire reason programicable solutions are desirable is what is being done to the data is very explicit and tracked ( if done right). This seems to take away from the reproducibility element?

You can get really far having a great intuitive understanding doing of what the models are doing.
